Upper snake river trappers sale is today. Probably just now taking fur, I wouldn't expect much news until tomorrow at earliest.

Re: Blackfoot sale - 01/26/19 06:27 PM

It's only 1130 AM in Blackfoot, things are just starting to pick up speed. Bids probably due about 5 PM, depending on amount of fur.

Tomorrow morning at the very earliest for official results.

Maybe Starvalley will check in later today and give us an update. I know he was going to the sale to buy fur.

Well, that's not much but at least it is something.

Top Lot Coyotes?

Who was the buyer?

Re: Blackfoot sale - 01/27/19 07:38 PM

Good sale for those with the better yotes. Putting this in perspective let us say the 80ish average was $82.50 and the average WI rat is $3.50 that means it takes 23 rats to make a western yote or in this case times 1400 33,000 rats which is some where about 2 to 3 times as many rats as will be caught and sold off the Horicon Marsh this year. Sometimes one just does not have the right commodity to harvest.

Who’s numbers are you using?
Your number is close to mine but slightly higher then what I come up with by averaging everything at what was bid.
Thanks

So the real question, is it an uptick in price or just better quality this go around making it appear better. It can be read either way.

Why would it be an uptick if the last sale averaged $95 ?

Re: Blackfoot sale - 01/28/19 01:12 AM

I would call it a market uptick from last year coupled with a market correction from last week!

Re: Blackfoot sale - 01/28/19 01:34 AM

Looks like about a 20% increase in the average price of coyotes from last year. And, about a 20% increase in quantity from last year.

Re: Blackfoot sale - 01/28/19 02:18 AM

I did not see the fur at the sale, my wife and I do the food .however I do get some news from the guys.
there were 1330 coyotes at the sale and a friend had high coyote at 188.00, I have no news on the sale average but had a guy tell me his average was around 130.00, no idea on number or grade. he does trap some nice high mountain dogs.
It seemed that the mood was good and there were many happy faces.
It will take our ladies a bit to compile everything, they worked Friday night and all day Saturday so they need a rest.
I will post the results when available.

Re: Blackfoot sale - 01/28/19 07:14 AM

Here is something to think about - starting back in November and continuing throughout the trapping season here in the west, there has been talk in the country about there being a shortage of coyotes. Due to various reasons - warm weather, mange, increased competition in the field, etc. even though the western US is a huge area, there are only a limited number of the really nice coyotes. And the traveling buyers are working the country hard.

So, if the guys backing the country buyers are buying into this notion that there is a shortage of coyotes, is that causing the increase in prices being paid. Just a thought.

The first 2 western fur sales are in the books and it appears there are plenty of coyotes. I think both ITA and Upper Snake offered more coyotes this year than last. Next up is the Colorado sale and I believe they are advertising 4000 plus coyotes. Then Utah and Nevada. Both thosebsales will have plenty of coyotes.

So will these prices hold or will the buyers decide there isn't a shortage of coyotes and back off on the price. Guess we shall see on February 7 in Hugo, Colorado.

Re: Blackfoot sale - 01/28/19 12:49 PM

Interesting Wissmiss,

Or, perhaps coyote production is down somewhat but these sales don't reflect that since the smaller western sales are becoming more popular? I asked earlier about the preliminary announcement of 70,000 coyote at NAFA. Maybe some of these early sales will result in fewer coyote than expected on the larger international auctions?

Re: Blackfoot sale - 01/28/19 01:17 PM

We will have over a thousand coyotes at our March sale. I don't think their is any more coyotes, just talking people out of sending them to NAFA. Prices will hold, getting calls all the time asking about my coyote count for March. Cats are definitely going be up on price and down on numbers. Well....A's and B cats are up. Still not much interest in low grade cats. If you have coyotes or cats, call me! I want them on my sale! Just locked down 50 more cats yesterday from Oregon and Colorado. Rusty 208-870-3217

Re: Blackfoot sale - 01/28/19 04:08 PM

We (New Mexico) usually have 600 to 900 coyotes haven't heard yet how many of this years catch is coming. Trapping is always more fun when the market is competetive
