Muzzle does appear short and blocky in relation to head size, but I'm not sure we are seeing the entire muzzle in the photo.

Great so far, it's always interesting to hear what other outdoorsman see, or instinctively know wether looking at this, following a trail, reasoning out one of mother natures scenarios or whatever.

I've seen some coyotes with blocky short faces and short nose's . I'm saying this Is a coyote

Re: Question for you all? - 01/27/19 03:11 PM

Coyote, shorter muzzle.

Re: Question for you all? - 01/27/19 03:11 PM

My first impression was wolf. It's ears look rounded to me and it looks to be more than 40 pounds.

Re: Question for you all? - 01/27/19 03:12 PM

i'm sayin coyote too as our big males get that look til you touch em and they feel like a wire brush.

i do feel for ya's as somebody that has dealt with the coyotes showing up here from none to now and they can be up to 3 coyotes in one.

Osky did you get to see the tracks? Curious if you know what this was?

Re: Question for you all? - 01/27/19 03:43 PM

Wolf, rounded ears short muzzle/broad head.

Re: Question for you all? - 01/27/19 03:43 PM

Yes, I know what it was. There are things I see in the photo that would and did lead me to a conclusion. In this case I was correct and yes there were more photos. Disclaimer I certainly am not always correct.

Re: Question for you all? - 01/27/19 03:49 PM

Hard to tell from a photo. His body position is such that you can't really see proportions well, or length of legs, etc. The best way to tell would be to board him and see which one he fits.

Re: Question for you all? - 01/27/19 03:50 PM

I say coyote. What I see of the legs do not look stout enough for wolf.

My first impression is coyote.

Wolf

His head is too blocky for yote

Re: Question for you all? - 01/27/19 04:32 PM

My first impression was coyote since I thought the muzzle looks slim in relation to the head but it would not surprise me greatly if it did turn out to be a wolf since others have made observations that escaped me at first.

Target of opportunity.

Re: Question for you all? - 01/27/19 04:41 PM

Wolf, and I base that on the appearance of the fur and the coloration, and head size relative to the body. There is a lot of long fur there and it's dense. You can bury your hand in it. You cant do that with a coyote.

Re: Question for you all? - 01/27/19 04:42 PM

Bctom... And Jacks saw what I saw when first looking at this photo. Others caught it too. Wolf.

A very broad forehead.
The rounded thick ear pointing at the camera.
The overall size of the head and muzzle.
And one more thing, the eye.

We are so heavy with wolves they are often seen out front on the lake, on the back logging roads, snow machine trails so we probably see them more than most in the country. Certainly they are a nuisance incidental catch too often. That is why I bring up the eye. To me there is something very different in wolfs eye than a coyote. Maybe it's just me. Maybe just size. Camera pics taken so close seem to high lite it at my bait stations.

This wolf to me also seems to have a heavy flank and leg, but I have the advantage of knowing that snow was plenty deep. I would put this wolf around 65lbs.

Here is another of our wolves, Disney has folks thinking they are all silver and beautiful but that's not correct. Only AK HOwler up in Alaska has the mother load on those. Thanks guys. Osky

It doesn't look like you have anymore snow than we do. About a foot in the woods here. Baker's dozen maybe, lol.

Re: Question for you all? - 01/27/19 04:48 PM

That was a last years pic Les. As for snow I'd say a good 20" on the ground.

The eye to head size is always a good indication. in their placement, size proportion.
Got on here a hour late for my twobits worth.

That shoulder hair must be 6 inches long so it was a Feb picture, sure was not a November

You nailed it North.. Feb is correct. Size of eyes is part of it but to me the coloring around the outer eye on wolves is more pronounced. Maybe like a gal wearing makeup and one not. Sorry ladies.

Hard tellin, not knowin, but the head makes me believe it is a wolf.

I didn't get in on the guessing game but shorter stub nose and large forehead would of made me say wuff.

Re: Question for you all? - 01/27/19 10:03 PM

I want to say an old male coyote. I caught one last year that had the same color. Redish back of ears, tri-color fur.

Thanks for the thread. Folks need to look at a wolf once in a while, you know, so a positive ID can be made, lol.

Re: Question for you all? - 01/28/19 03:35 AM

Looking at the saplings in the close background, They look like blades of grass compared to this animal. If it is a coyote, he weighs 80-100 pounds.

If the warden is asking, I say it's a coyote!
