Hint. Really was brass monkeys on ships. Where did the saying came from?

Brass monkeys were cannonball holding trays on ships. When it was very cold, the trays could contract and the cannonballs would fall of, thus the expression "cold as a brass monkey".

The funky brass monkey the Beastie Boys sing about is a mixed drink, served over ice.

Some ground I trapped in south central MT was referred to as the old 'brass monkey mine'. Always wondered where the name came from.
