Re: Finished a Carving - 01/30/19 01:33 AM

Are these bespoke? Do you do them in a mountain man motif? I can picture one of those in my cave.

Re: Finished a Carving - 01/30/19 01:43 AM

Very nice. What do you sharpen your chisels with? I use the torment system for knives, regular chisels, and lathe tools as I don’t hand carve, and I have the up most respect for those that do.

Re: Finished a Carving - 01/30/19 02:18 AM

I have about 35 or so hours in them. It is all hand carved no chainsaw/electric tools used done the old fashion way one chip at a time. I sharpen tools by hand and very fine grit sand paper. All color is with nature coloring like different colors of soil, berry, bark, coal etc. and oiled. Yes, I do carve some mountain man also.

Re: Finished a Carving - 01/30/19 05:31 AM

with the shadow from his nose, he looks to have a "lazy eye", his right one. I mention this because there was a native chief in this area with that same characteristic back during the uprising. he was called "sleepy eye", and theres a town named after him where I grew up. your carving vaguely reminds me of old photos of him I saw many years ago. your work is beautiful.

That is interesting story and I had no idea of such a cheif. I don't look at pictures to carve from I just start and what ever it turns out to be it does. It is funny though that I was actually wanting to do a lazy eye on a carving before. This carving started out it had a hat with a large rim and it wasn't what I wanted and chiseled it off. No pictures, I just start and the carving takes me to the end. The wood is flying and the thing is you can't put it back on once you took it off. LOL

Thanks and I will at sometime do a sleepy eye, one closed and one open.

Re: Finished a Carving - 01/30/19 05:16 PM

his name was ish-tak-ha-ba, and he was made a chief around 1825. Sisseton Dakota tribe and born near new ulm Minnesota. few pics on google but I didn't look too deeply, and didn't see any that showed his lazy eye clearly.
