What is this thing?

Guy I got it from said it was a whale harpoon but I'm not really convinced of that. Whatever it is, it's old and hand forged so I thought it was cool. If it's a pig castrator I would not want to see the pig it was made for.

Ice chisel maybe? Looks like it's been pounded on the end a lot.

I think he meant weasel harpoon.

The two legged kind that nobody wants around.

I've seen that style of forged tip on African implements before; spear tips, knives, etc.

That is a prototype birth control device. The second generation model had a more comfortable handle shape. That device is still commonly used in northern Appalachia.

Does not look like a whale harpoon. They typically have barbs to prevent pulling back out and are more slender.

The first Harpoon used on a whale had barbs, but after the "Nantucket Sleigh Ride", when the Whale was pooped and came to the surface, a "Coup de gras" lance without barbs was used to pierce the heart to kill.

Looks like a bark peeler used to wedge the bark from pulpwood or fence posts for when the tree is still wet and sappy . Once the sap drys up you would start using a draw knife to peel wood and that is a lot tougher. We used to bevel car springs to get the same effect when peeling pulp.

I don't see it as a whaling weapon as all I've seen never had a flat to attach to the pole. Even at that, 1 hole wouldn't mount it to anything very well.
I'm guessing t h e hole was to hang it up. O their than that, I completely have no idea what it is. Lol

Bark spud would be my guess.

Doesn't look like it's made to attach to anything. The hole is just for hanging it on a nail. The end looks like it's been pounded on by a sledgehammer.

From the way the iron has come off in chunks that it was forged iron to start with them hammered into shape to be bevelled on the end.
Fence post log splitter ?
