Hey Newt, see anything familiar? Old knives. - 03/27/19 11:39 PM

I finally decided it was time to build a display case/coffee table for some of my old butcher knives. Many were dad's knives plus a few I have collected.

ADC Man does that bring back memories My Dad had a wooden case full of butcher knives and steels .Plus a few cleavers .When we moved from the farm in the mid 1960's the only thing not sold at the farm sale was the meat saw .I do not have any idea what price they sold for .But I would pay 5 times more to have them back Your display table is a great way to put them out for others to see .Thanks for the trip down memory lane

my Dad was a "Meat Cutter"...NOT a "butcher".

We have several knives like those pictured, as well as a very nice steel.

Every Thanksgiving weekend our house was host to a neighborhood butchering event .About 4 families got together and butchered several pigs and a beef All the men took care of killing skinning a beef and scalding the hogs .The women helped with various parts of the process .Every family would bring food for the mid day meal and usually by early Sat morning the job was finished Everyone went their way with their share of the meat .My father had most of the equipment so it stayed at our place All those things are also long gone. I remember a huge wooden scalding trough .Wooden tubs, sausage stuffers , metal boiling pots for making ponhaus . All those item are now considered antiques for the most part . For us they where just tools to use to have a supply of meat for a year

My Dad is 90 and skins from 10 to 20 roadkill deer a day using knives, saw and sharpening steel like the ones you have displayed. Also has a triangular shaped oil dipped 3 stone sharpener dated 1910. His concession to old age is he sits down for a minute or so between deer. Salts and stacks the hides on pallets, gets premium prices as most have no holes from bullets or arrows.

Thanks everyone. W151 and Eric great stories. We had a big enough family we didn't have the neighbors over, by the time I was old enough to really join in 4 of my siblings already had families of their own so there was a big gathering of us come time to butcher animals.

I have 3 different size meat saws. Use them also . Scuba1 are you looking for a meat saw if so what is the length you looking for.If I find one I can let you know. They show up once in awhile for where I go. That is how I found 2 of the ones I got and one was my parents.

Jeff this one is 50x20" If you start with a standard coffee table it would be easy to build the box for the top. I can tell you how I did it if you want to PM me. Pretty simple design, I don't have all right wood working tools to do it in a professional manner but I'm happy with how it turned out. The acrylic top (1/4" thick) is the expensive part.

White Marlin I understand what you are saying My Dad was also the Meat Cutter of the group .When he would use a steel to sharpen a knife his movements where like a well oiled machine .In no time at all the knife was as sharp as it had ever been and ready to get back to the business at hand All these years later I can still see him sharpening a knife and all these years later I still can not do it a efficiently as he did
