Scored a piece of Kansas hunting ground for free!! - 04/03/19 12:28 PM

I own a tree service and meet a lot of people from all walks of life. Work for some very wealthy summer residents that come up from Florida to get away from the heat. I love to hunt and trap and I'll usually mention that sometime during my conversation with customers(some like it some don't). Yesterday I got a call for an estimate and noticed it was a Kansas phone number, so when I was speaking to him about his trees and ask him if he ever hunted in Kansas. And the response I got was not what I expected. He begin to tell me that he and his sister owned 1100 acres in Southeast Kansas, and it had a house on it and I was welcome to go out and hunt it anytime I wanted, said it'd only been hunted a few times in the past several years by a father and son he took out there. Said there wouldn't be another soul on it this season. Before I was done he was sending me topo maps of the property and everything. There are still good people around that are willing to let people hunt and this guy is one of them. It's a long way from Tenn, but I may have to make a trip to Kansas. The property is in Elk and Chautaugua counties, is anyone familiar with that area. Thanks

SE Kansas is loaded with deer. I travel down there and flathead fish a place or two during the summer. Lots of Deer like up home here and good ones I'd suppose.

Decent area for deer and coyotes. Coyotes are not good colored. Some cats I'm sure. A few quail no pheasants.

Yea, I love to hunt for big bucks and have always wanted to take a trip to Kansas. Golf ball I'm not sure if I will be able to make it in November this year or not. I'm going back to southern Illinios again this year and I have a place in southern Ohio that I go too already, so the wife would probably kill me if I plan another trip during that time. Lol. May have to go early or late season. It's in Independence township where the house and 550 acres is which is Chautaugua county and the 600 acre tract is in Elk county.

No doubt would be a great trip for trapping especially ! I have a buddy that’s been out a few times and really liked the easy coyotes . I may try and get him to go since he already has connections.
RM I plan to make this an annual event , might take a year or two to work out all the kinks but it sounds like a good place to go .

He said I was more than welcome to trap while out there. Going to have to check the trapping regs for nonresident. Like to snag a few mid western yotes while there hunting

Nobody that he knows of..........He might be surprised. The locals surely knows he's not around.
Kansas is well known for having some dandy whitetail bucks!

RM - Would you be hunting archery or firearms? I live/hunt in Northeast Kansas and see more bigger bucks in December than any other time. If rifle hunting then you’d be hunting here in December which in my area coincides with the secondary rut. I’ll sometimes have 2-3 big bucks plus a couple young bucks chasing a single doe during this period.

Really nice country. I haven't hunted there in about 15 years and didnt see a whole lot of deer on the public ground. We did see some absolute giants. You will have a blast. Bring lock on stands as the trees aren't straight enough for climbers. Lots of coyotes and I saw 7 Bobcats in 10 days, but couldn't shoot the cats. Good luck to you I am jealous!

Re: Scored a piece of Kansas hunting ground for free!! - 04/04/19 01:05 AM

Yea Gary there's always someone sneaking on every property, but his brother who is an ex-marine lives on the property and he said he was pretty good at watching the property. Sounds good but I'll just have to check it out myself. Railroader I'd probably be hunting December. He said that most places it was tough to get close shots and there was always deer in the big hayfields so I'd say it would definitely be best to rifle hunt

Well like i said the December firearms season is always HOT, at least where i am. I have seen more big bucks during that two week period than all other times combined. Killed 3 of my last 4 bucks during December firearms season.

That's awesome RM!
I lined up so much prime land last year it made my head spin.
Most with just a phone call also.

Always keep in mind though. There are I'm sure some kids( local) that would love to hunt but have no place or are afraid to ask to hunt. Having that much property is cool but, maybe work with the owner on getting some kids in there first.

You n I like big deer but I'm doing quit a bit of sacrifices these days to help out the youngins.

Re: Scored a piece of Kansas hunting ground for free!! - 04/04/19 01:27 AM

Yea I have 3 small kids and have a lease in Illinois and have a little place in Ohio that I hunt so it's hard to get time to go very much. But it's not every day that you get opportunities like this especially without having to pay. It's the guys homeplace and him and his sister and brother kept it all but no longer run cattle on it, said they let a guy cut hay on some it and the other is grown up fields with hedge rows and some bigger trees. From the topo maps he sent it looks great. Only problem is 550 acres is unit 12 and he said the 600 acre tract sometimes is in unit 12 and other years it's unit 13. Is that common for them to move the units

Re: Scored a piece of Kansas hunting ground for free!! - 04/04/19 01:31 AM

Yea bucks this guy would definitely let kids hunt, he moved here a few years ago from Florida and only goes put there a few times a year so he probably doesn't know to many people in the area. Said it had been 40 years since he actually lived there. He has a brother that stays on the property but doesn't hunt. The way he sounded they were over run with deer and would love to have people hunt and thin them out. Maybe he could host a youth hunt or something to that nature. He sounded like they never had any locals ask about hunting

There is no such thing as an "ex-Marine" ..... just Marines who have gotten fat.

You better check the deadline for tags. Might have missed it for this year. They have a later one for leftovers around July. Leftovers are gone really quick like within minutes.

Re: Scored a piece of Kansas hunting ground for free!! - 04/04/19 02:28 AM

RM - A Kansas State Representative is trying to pass a bill that would make it legal for landowners with over 80 acres to sell one deer tag to out of state hunters. Not sure if it will pass but it would allow a lot more opportunity for out of staters like y’all. Even if you cant get a tag this year keep an eye on our regulations for next season.

You still have a couple of weeks to apply for a deer tag. If you look at KDWP website, the deadlines are scrolling on the front page.
