Might of found a nice spot (pic heavy) - 04/15/19 01:23 PM

This is a spot on a public state park about 15 minutes from my house. Me and my fiance went down in here just to look around, and the other day we did some fishing, caught a few perch, channel cat, and carp. Still a little cold. But while we were fishing i decided to take some pics. Even got to see a mink strolling through. It didnt seem to care we were there, even stopped briefly for pics. What do you guys think? Alot of tracks there too. Im mainly going to be setting 110s for mink/muskrat. But might set out a few footholds for fox and yote. Might set 1 330 for beaver. And was thinking a foothold on that island for coon. Any tips or ideas are very much appreciated.

My kinda creek. I always thought mink used those high exposed roots like in the one photo, just never figured out a set for that situation.

Looks like you've got fluctuations in water levels judging from the lack of vegetation on the bank. I'd revisit this area once a week for awhile to get a feeling for how much fluctuation you have. Especially after a rain, take a look to see how long it takes for the river to drop back to whatever is normal. This will help you later during trapping season to judge where you can place your trap if making sets along the water's edge.

Well this all floods through the rainy seasons, but it drains into a huge lake about a mile down creek. But ill be going here fishing through the summer, and will hit it in the fall during hunting. So ill keep an eye on it. I do alot of squirrel hunting a little up stream, and it gets quite soggy there. I would assume it wouldnt take long to drain out, especially if the dam is open on the lake, which this one almost always is.

Looks great. Nice spot. In a public state park I'd be a little wary of setting canine footholds or snares. Probably lots of dogs with their owners using it. Otherwise looks great.

Well this is completely out of the way, on an old dirt road, out in the backwaters of the park. Not many people go down into those areas, except hunters.

Copy that. Our "state parks" here in Idaho are purposefully placed with designated walking trails, canoe rentals, etc. So I didn't know if it was the same there.

Yeah its the same here too. But im completely out of the way. This is way away from where people who visit go to. Here is a map of the park, arrow showing about where ill be, about a mile down the road from that intersection.

Not sure if you'll find any mink there, but I'm sure you could catch some other critters. haha

You might want to check at the park office regarding beaver trapping. Trapping beaver/otter on public land is by permit.

"State park" ??? Are you sure it's legal to trap there ?

Lots of critter sign but that looks like some slimy, nasty mud.

Just looked that up, yep your right! Not a big deal to me, ive only got one 330, i can set it elsewhere. Im not going to pay them extra money to trap one animal, when trapping others is ok.

Absolutely positive. Its public hunting, fishing, trapping. Might be called a state park, and the state thinks they own it. But actually its a public park, owned by the public, and maintained by our employees, the state workers. Sorry ive got a problem with government. But yes its completely legal. This whole area is hunted and trapped every year. And im in Ohio, its all slimy nasty mud grin

Yeah it does for sure. Luckily i wont need a way to get in! Where i park my jeep, it only takes 1-2 minutes to walk over the hill to the creek. Most of that dirtroad rides right along the creek all the way to the lake.

I think most people on tman are honest folkes, however I wouldn't make a habit of posting maps of public areas you want to trap...
With that said it looks promising. Good luck!

I know for a fact that anti trappers visit this site. That's why I wouldn't post the map.
