Prescription killers - 04/28/19 08:26 PM

Killers. I just watched my sister tell her grandkids that their mommy is dead. 29 years old. Lost her kids to the system. She made many, many mistakes, and tried to get them back. It was easy, to easy, to go the dr. and tell them the next story for pills. I’m mad at myself, for being mad at her, for not doing more. We had her go to mental health. I know more could have been done.

If you take them, be careful. If they are in your house and you don’t need them, get rid of them. People like my neice will get them. If you know someone that has a problem with them, tell them. Talk to their families, their doctors even. Ticking someone off is better than going to their funeral.

sorry to hear that and agree 100 percent with everything you said but you can't beat yourself up over others actions especially when no matter what you said would of made a difference.at this point it's all about the kids.

I'm sorry for your loss.
I wish the FDA would ban them. Drs look at me and think I'm after opiates. I now have them listed as a rx allergy.

1/2 the country is on drugs of one type or the other to alter their mood/perception of their situation. Maybe more than 1/2 when you add in chronic alcohol users. Its a sad situation and why you run across so many horses backsides each day while your out and about.

They sure do, that's why I started listing it as an allergy. That'd wild they did that but it doesn't surprise me. I don't blame you for being cautious with teens in the house. Yeah they can get it somewhere but it beats the quick easy access.
I would rather see weed be legalized then have these rx's available.

Narcotic prescription is the biggest death cause in America for folks under 30

Sorry to hear of your family's loss.

If it was an accidental OD, then her doctor may be partly responsible.

If it was an intentional OD, then it makes no sense to blame the tool she used, any more than if it had been a gun.

When you go to a DR. Take their prescriptions, go to mental health, take their prescription, go to a specialist for something else, take their meds....See the problem. She was using the system to get pills, to get high or whatever they do to you.

Don’t compare this to guns. You shoot a gun you know what happens. You take MEDICINE you think your getting help. Next thing you know, your hooked, and you can keep getting pills, must be ok, the drs are giving it to me. Please don’t reply for an Argument James. You want to discuss the issue, by all means, continue.

Every prescription comes with a talk to the pharmacist and ten pages of possible side effects, as well as the Dr's orders and explanations; I don't buy this "didn't know" baloney. They all know and they deliberately lie to the providers. Never been to a Dr that didn't ask for all the meds, vitamins, OTC stuff and herbal supplements that I'm using, they ask for two reasons; one is so that they don't over prescribe or prescribe conflicting drugs, the other reason is they note your answers and in doing that cover their tails. James comment is right on the mark.

Heroin killed a neighbor this year, seems like it is about as hard to find as a beer and just as cheap.

Happened to the son of a good friend. He never knew his adult son had a problem. Such a loss.

Sorry for your loss, but James made a valid point.
Those drugs help a lot of people terminally ill with cancer.
I agree they are overprescribed in a lot of cases, but not always the doctors fault.
A lot of stuff on the streets now is knock off black market opioids from china, smuggled across porous borders.

There was a 60 minutes article about how companies in China are sending Fentanyl through the US mail. You can go on the internet and order it and they send it through the US mail.

Re: Prescription killers - 04/30/19 03:59 AM

Sorry for your loss. I really feel for the children involved.
I had both shoulder joints replaced after four shoulder repair surgeries. Was prescribed oxycodone as well as morphine after first replacement surgery. Had real bad experiences after the first shoulder replacement, wont go into details. Thought I was going to have to get professional help to get off the oxy, scared me bad.
Waited a year for the second shoulder replacement. Wasn't afraid of the surgery but the thought of the oxy scared me bad. about three days after the surgery was having the same problems. I went cold turkey with the oxy, nurse told me most people cant do it but I did. Dealing with the extreme pain was a trade off I was willing to take. Used a ton of ice and Tylenol to get me through the next two weeks.
I flushed a bunch of that crap down my septic system. Knew for sure nobody would get it by doing that.
I had cancer surgery about 3 years ago and told the doc I didn't want anything resembling that crap for pain. Its better to suffer through the best you can and stay away from that stuff.
My wife was a saint dealing with me and that stuff. It put her thru a lot of misery also.
There are other options for pain. There is no perfect pain killer, you got to deal with some discomfort.
I've been there and done it plus I have more ahead of me with this cancer.
Just my two cents.

Sadly this has affected or touched nearly everyone in the United States, including myself.

Re: Prescription killers - 04/30/19 04:29 AM

Believe it or not there are legitimate doctors prescribing legitimate pain medication and even other legitimate medication to legitimate patients suffering from legitimate pain and other legitimate medical conditions.

Many self-righteous opinions are uninformed generalizations and do not apply to individual people or situations.

Re: Prescription killers - 04/30/19 04:50 AM

I've used the stuff, following various surgeries, and when I didn't overdo them I could function at a high level. For medical reasons, I can't take Advil or aspirin, and Tylenol doesn't always cut it for me.

I didn't have much trouble quitting by tapering off, but if you quit cold turkey, you have my sympathy.

These painkillers have valid medical functions.

Re: Prescription killers - 04/30/19 11:01 AM

I went to the doctor for a suspected broken wrist one time. X-rays showed it was just a bad sprain. I asked the doctor for some pain pills because the pain was keeping me awake at night and I couldn't sleep. I just wanted something to kill the pain long enough the allow me to get to sleep for a couple of nights. The doctor looked at me suspiciously when I asked for the pain meds. But he went ahead and wrote a prescription for vicodin. The pharmacist filled the order for a 30-day supply of pain pills. Holy Crap! I was only wanting 2-3 pills - 5 tops! I asked her to cut down the number of pills because I didn't want to pay for something I wasn't going to use.

I couldn't believe how much they overprescribed a narcotic pain killer for a guy who just wanted to numb the pain for a couple of hours so he could get some sleep. That didn't seem responsible to me - especially after the doctor was clearly suspicious.

I wouldn't be afraid to use a narcotic pain medication in certain circumstances. I think I know the dangers well enough to be VERY careful with them. You can get hooked on them so easily. Many people use them very successfully. But you darn sure better be very careful and watch yourself.
