Not Prime Beaver Pelts - 04/30/19 03:52 PM

I have my first couple beaver i ever trapped from this year, the are not super thick so im assuming they arent quite prime. they were trapped in Nov in South Dakota. I thought about sending them to a tanner since it was my first beaver but if they arent prime or dont look that good dont want to waste the time. Im also assuming they wont fetch much at auction either. What does everyone do with unprime beaver? I have pictures of the three pelts, if anyone can tell by looking at pictures.

They'll still look good as wall hangars and such. Could make decent garments too though maybe not the warmest or smoothest.

Some of the best unprime Beaver I think to get tanned for being really soft is kit Beaver late December into January as some of them don't have much guard hair on the belly's so they are almost like sheared Beaver and what guard hairs are there on the belly side are fairly soft. Dorsal skin those if you want to make stuff out of them.

Tan them.As a wall hanger, throw,or on a hoop, they will look fine.Beaver prime up last on the neck, shoulder area behind the ears,so even if you wanted to make stuff out of them there is a lot of good useable fur on those,by the look of the pics.

They look decent to me. Tan them for wall hangers. If those were your first beaver, you did an excellent job handling them.

Beaver are one of the toughest pelts to home tan,and get results comparable to a factory tan, unless you have some tanning skills under your belt.
Send them out.If you want to home tan one get a med or lm late winter or early spring pelt to do.

This. I have home tanned a few and "hooped" them on willow hoops with leather laces. Turned out great as a wall decoration, but hide is stiff like cardboard. For a blanket or throw send them off, if you just want to hang them flat on a wall, try the home tan. Although it is a lot of work.

That is a great put up for your first ones, get them tanned and hoop them.

The flesh side indicates that they are not prime. Should be white colored. Unfortunately beaver prices are in the dumper now. If you sell them you will not get much; will go as "hatters".
If you tan the cost might be too much. Up to you.

They will turn out just fine tanned. Good covering of guard hairs. Very nice put up.

You did a very nice job putting them up; particularly if these were you first ones. I've sold a few similar to yours as wall hangers for $65 to $75 dollars.
I tanned them myself using that tanning stuff in the orange colored bottle you can buy from most any trapping supply company. Not for sure, but I think I bought mine from MN Trapline Supply listed on Tman. I didn't think it was that hard to do. I thought it was sort of fun.

Nice put-up.
Yes, they are pretty blue and the under fur won't be very thick, but the guard hair looks pretty well developed. They will be great for wall hangers or even making something.

This looks like a great job of fur handling for your first effort, commendable! I would recommend using them for wall hangers. Mittens, hats or a throw require a little more under fur (cushion) to look and feel really nice as a made up item.

Very good job for your first ones.
That yellow stuff on the leather is dried fat/grease burn.
You can get rid of that right after you board them with a sharp knife, and some finish scraping with a tool like this. [Linked Image]
Once you scrape out the liquid grease and chunks of fat,the pelts wont dry as dark on the leather side either.

That fat seems awful yellow for this year's beaver. I'd store them somewhere cooler with less air flow. Seems to me a guy could store them in a unheated building in South Dakota most of the winter?

P.S. If you having tanning issues, it may be due to fatty areas that have yellowed.
