Turkey with Dads 16ga double - 05/11/19 02:32 PM

Was able to get a late season permit for my county this year and got a jake this morning that was in a group of 3. No gobbling or strutting they were working there way across a small soy bean food plot. Finally got within 35 yards and the first guy to stick his head up was it. Shot laid him out he, was still flopping some so I shot him in the head just to make sure didn't want any surprises.
Little history on the gun savage 311 16ga double. I remember only seeing it couple of times early on, Dad had sold it to my cousin Jim so he could deer hunt.Ii'm guessing around 1970 I might of been in kindergarten or first grade. Have no idea where dad got the gun from. When dad passed away Jim said he still had it and gave it back to me when he came home from Pennsylvania back in 2007. I used factory winchester 1 1/8 num 6 2 3/4 inch. Next year will use Mom 12 ga JC Higgins pump

Nice. I have a Remington 11-87 twelve gauge that shoots three inch turkey loads but you don't need that to kill turkey. I've taken two with my old Stevens double barrel twenty this season and it's a lot more fun to lug around. Before and after pic and video.

I always like respect for old guns that stayed in the family.

As for jakes... you can't eat spurs.

Eat a turkey breast sandwich for me after the first meal. That was always my favorite part of the bird.

Nice going, guys! Great way to carry out the legacy. You both have me thinking about the Parker D Grade we inherited from my wife's Great-Grandfather. Gotta get myself healthy and see if it still has the magic.

Again, good going!

Outstanding!! I used to see those old "purple" shell guns on a regular basis when I was much younger, not much any more. I think if you asked most teenage hunters, like my hs graduating son, if they had ever seen a 16 gauge, they'd say no.

Nice, they do have that delayed flop it seems when you go to pick them up they start flopping no matter how close they are when shot.

I have my dad's 311 16 ga.
It had a nylon stock and forearm. The stock was broke off many years ago and replaced
with a wood one.The forearm is still nylon.
I might use it next year turkey hunting.
