Might be hard to find brass.I think the Russian ammo on the market is steel case.(dirt cheap)

Russian/Chicom SKS ammo, not too common. Google " 7.62 x 54 ammo". Not cheap.

AK SKS 7.62X39. 7.62X54R is an awesome round. Hard to find brass for but if I remember correctly it is commercially available for reloading

It's been years but mine was about accurate as I've ever shot with irons. I had absolute confidence in it out to any reasonable range. Ballistically it's the equal of 7.62 NATO/.308WIN.

That scope though is going to negate the use of stripper clips unless it's a side mount. Stripper clips are required if you're going to run a mosin smoothly.

for brass buy Prvi Partizan PPU ammo it isn't half bad stuff to begin with and at a decent price then you have brass to reload.

it will also give you test groups of what a factory ammo will do then your looking for better than that with your reloads

I bought one at a garage sale for $50 about 30 years ago. It is more stock looking than yours . Could never get it to group good. Wife shot a bear in the yard with it once though. Norma was the only ammo manufacturer back then. The old Russian military stuff had, I believe, some corrosive powder, so cleaning had to be regular as I recall. Don't quote me on that! The round supposedly preformed somewhere between a 30-30 and a 308 if I remember correctly. I got some brass, but I got to save it.

P.S. I just looked at a box of ammo and noticed those rimmed cartridges you have to be careful to load correctly.

I'll second the PPU ammo. Probably the best value in ammo you can get right now. The brass is good quality and will make good reloads if you do your part. Here at the shop we sell 7.62x54R PPU for $17.99 a box of 20.

Re: Anyone shoot 7.62x54r? - 05/17/19 08:45 PM

it is actually so close to a 308 that they took and wrapped a wire around the rim of the 7.62x51 nato cases 308 in dimensions but less pressure than 308 win and ran those in their 7.62x54 Nagants in Bosnia in the early 90s. I guess poor groups beat a club and they had to be poor groups that would be a .308 bullet sliding down a .311 bore.

Re: Anyone shoot 7.62x54r? - 05/17/19 10:13 PM

Just to add a few things. The Mosin Nagant has an ingenious interupter to prevent rim lock. Also the .308 and 7.62x54 have about 17 thousands difference ahead of the web-enough to assume serious case separation. DO NOT attempt this. And for the record, Norma factory 7.62x54 has been loaded for many years with .308 diameter bullets, and they do not "slide" down a .311 bore. They obturate to fit as they are flat based. Many reload with .308 diameter bullets with reasonable success.

Honesty I've never really had any kind of need to run stripper clips

I guess you don't have feral junk appliances in your area. Got to watch out for those refrigerators and washing machines. LOL

Seriously though if you do get a handful of mosin strippers hang on to them there no supply depot issuing those anymore.

Re: Anyone shoot 7.62x54r? - 05/18/19 01:23 AM

Yep I got 2 of them. One has a built in bayonet the other I took the wood stock off and put it into a synthetic. Had to do some dremel work to get barrel free floated. Using the sites she came with I wouldn't hesitate to shoot a hog or deer within reasonable distance. I bought hunting loads and save the brass.

The surplus ammo has corrosive primers so clean accordingly.

No offense taken. Fair enough question. Honestly lately I've just haven't been as talkative honestly. I read all the responses for the most part and really enjoy them but lately in general unless someone asks for me or something I just kinda lurk.and read. I really do enjoy reading whatalot of y'all write

And as far as other people's stuff, again I do read a good many posts,I lurk on the fall coyotes chat alot but either I don't feel I have anything really worth inputting( sorry but after being told mutiple times I shouldn't say anything because I don't catch anything figured I'd be best if I kept my yap shut)or the topic just isn't something I'm interested in. Theirs also been some personal things but let's not get into that.

I was googling them, says not reslly a battle rifle, not lot energy, from my experience , the sks was well built, simple an reliable but chesp soft wood, they didn't have a long range. We're they used in Viet Nam much? Us weapons or m16, at rifle or whatever is 5.56 round? Smaller bullet but lot more velocity, range an more accurate. Ammo was cheap when I got sks. Bought at hardware store for $70 , just after they banned the bayonet, sold it few years back. No use for it ever
