? AC Fan Motor labor charge ?

Our AC unit condensing fan motor was replaced Sept.2018....used very little.
Its covered under the 1 year warranty.
Turned the AC unit on today (1st time this year)
Was told labor is only good for 30-days! (never heard that before)...no where does it say that on the invoice.
Question...should you have to pay labor again to have the replacement one put in for the bad one ?

So, I know it's not what you are asking, but it seems to me, a handy fella, could easily change out such a motor in about 20 minutes. Why bother with the service call? Now, to answer your question. I would expect to pay labor because the faulty fan motor was not the fault of who installed it.

If you do decide to do it yourself, do not, I repeat DO NOT get the wiring wrong.

You cannot make a post like that without additional information. We need to fully understand your plight.

I know it a easy fix.

I was not home when it had to be fixed...so they called a tech.

Are you sure it's the motor? It could very well be a capacitor... Easy, inexpensive fix.

And I agree with trapperkeck as far as paying for labor.

It strikes me that HVAC parts must be made of spun sugar (or something equally fragile) since I hear so much discussion about units needing constant repair.

They have wired replacement motors to be kind of "catch alls." They can be wired for either direction, multi speed, for start caps and for start/run caps. Depending what motor is coming off, you could have 4-5 extra wires. Wire two speeds together and you'll burn it up quick, fast and in a hurry. lol

Most universal condenser fan motors only have 4 long wires multi speed fans can have multiple wires. On a traditional fan there is usually 2 brown wires that go the the capacitor and the other 2 go to each leg of the contactor. The direction wires are normally much shorter and are already hooked together. To reverse the motor direction you just swap those wires. It is very unusual for a fan motor to fail that quickly without a pretty good power surge or other electrical issue. The most common cause of a premature failure is the installer did not remove the small rubber plug on the bottom of the motor. This plug allows moisture to escape and if left in can cause a motor to fail very quickly.

And yes there is normally a reasonable labor charge to replace a warranty part. The exception is I charge no labor if in the first year of a new piece of equipment. In this case the condenser.

My condenser unit was under warranty when it went bad. Labor was not covered.

I would fully expect to pay for labor on a parts change where the parts were still under warranty.
