New home for the canoe

New home for the canoe - 05/22/19 12:05 AM

Went to ranch today and worked on a few projects. I dug in 4 posts and put a couple of cross members across to get the canoe from where it was stored. I will go back tomorrow and put some small poles on the side about half way up to store and lay my junk on it. lol Anyone else store their canoe outside? While I was working a hen turkey flew down from the cedars and landed about 20 feet from me it clucked a few times and walked off. When I fist saw it flying at me I thought is was an golden or buzzard. I can't believe she didn't see me or heard me down there working. Had time and went for a walk and found this. I Canadian goose came off the nest and just about scared me to death. I was about 6 to 8 feet when it took off and I never seen her sitting on the eggs. Lol

Stored my old canoes outside like that for years. Cool find. Have a pair of Canadas nesting on the beaver pond just south of the house. One has a band on it's leg.

^ you mean if put up in the air like this it would blow away??

J.Morse >> I could store in the shed but it would be more work getting in and out and up and down, then it would be worth. Thanks >> that's pretty cool having a tagged one around!

Yes, it’s blowed away on the ground before. Reckon you could strap it down

This. Here wether on a rack or brackets on a side building always anchor the canoe down. A good storm with wind destroys them pretty easy.

I got it tied down to the X members on the end and tied across the top to the posts. I would think that should sufficient.

I love my canoe but I just lay it down on some criss cross logs so its off the ground. It gets covered in snow in the winter but haven't noticed any ill effect from that. The sun has aged it more than anything.

I got tin that I could cover the top and was thinking about doing that. I store all the fishing gear under the canoe as well.

I like that rack... I keep mine in the shop on a couple sawhorses. It's a 1980's Coleman and is still going strong but I just don't feel great about letting it bake under the sun all spring and summer when I'm not using it.

Nice rack and beautiful ground to take a walk on.

I've got both canoes up on racks like that. Paddles and such go underneath 'em. Storage area on the ground. Run a chain through both so they have to walk away together.

Snowy you’re getting closer and closer to a shed!

Not crazy about the sun beating down on it either. I might get a light tarp and strap that over it.

When I look at that picture what I plan on doing is moving that canoe down, to the lower cross members. Then add 2 side members to lay all the other stuff I need to straighten up. I have a lot of T posts I need to get off of the ground. That way with it on the bottom, it will get plenty of shade. Thanks all.

Snowy, I would put a roof over that too. The sun does a number on anything sitting out all summer.

Why not a type of pole barn ? All open sides, and a decent pitch metal roof ? You already have the makings of one ...all it needs is a well pitched roof cool

^ exactly what I will do. For now I moved the canoe down and used the top for some storage like T post and some wood. [Linked Image]

That tin should be on top; looks more like a snake magnet on the ground right now.
x-bracing needed ?
