I need a hobby

I need a hobby - 05/23/19 10:03 PM

I am going insane. I have a pinched sciatic nerve due to misalignment in my back. I cant really work, I cant really do anything outside, I have been reading at night which is nice but during the day I am sitting on Tman and FB hitting Refresh. Any ideas on something more productive someone who is bed/chair bound can work on?

I tie flies,, good time to open the safe and clean guns, clean up around the house, (I truly hate that), play with the Beagle, watch movies/TV, pay bills, ( hatred 2nd only to cleaning house), I use a library 'puter so that's out.

(It's a real drag when I can't get back to sleep after the 2-3am whiz)

Ride horses, look for Mushrooms, hunt, trap, read. I have almost no artistic ability as far as painting or drawing is concerned. I am hoping I am better by this weekend, at this point I cant really bend over or do anything. I do not care for computers or tv outside of using the computer to read and interact on forums/social media.

I do have netflix, can anyone recommend anything on there? I am hoping this gets better soon, I am only 29 and not used to being down and out yet.

Not trying to be a smart butt here, but try getting on the floor with a tennis ball under the tip of your hip bones and fix that pinched sciatic . Start with a flat footed squat until your back muscle stretch out and relax.
Fought this pain for years with chiropractic help. Now I do it every morning religiously by myself. Been a life changer.

Thank you, I will try it. I went to the Chiropractor this morning and it did not help, he said it seemed as though it was not a disc injury but misalignment and it was to stiff for him to do much, I think will go again tomorrow and hope that something gets better.

Educate yourself for a new hobby.

Read up on beekeeping, gardening, woodworking, or whatever. I joined a beekeeping group on Facebook for Ohio and am learning lots through the conversations on it.

Learn to homebrew. Or to make wine. Learn to cook a meal for your family.

Learn how to make cheese.

It would go well with your whine.

I own my own business, I still work but had to take Wednesday,Thursday off and I cant see myself getting back to work or doing anything physically exerting until at least Monday. I am just looking for something temporary (over the weekend and perhaps in the future) that I can do until my stupid back pops back into place, as of now it is very difficult to do anything other than sit, lay down or stand in one place.

Re: I need a hobby - 05/24/19 02:17 AM

Well if ya can sit, lay down and stand in one place, may I suggest a career in politics. There is good money in it and thats pretty much all you have to do in that job these days.

If your sciatica is acting up, if suggest walking as much as you can. It will keep you lossened up til those muscles/nerves decide to let you get back to your life. Being sedentary isnt the answer.

I have been thru it many times, keep moving.

you like to read , try reading healing back pain naturally the mind body connection.

https://www.amazon.com/Healing-Back-Pain-Naturally-Mind-Body/dp/0743424646

some times it isn't what we do but what we don't do that causes us back pain.

blew my first 2 disks 20 years ago 2 more about 5 years later , now lived 15-20 years with between 2 and 4 ruptures .

the book was recommended by a fireman customer of mine who had to take a few years off fighting fires and work emergency comms where he was a customer of mine. he left emergency comms and went back to fire fighting. blew all my disks in my early 20s , my 30s were actually better and now in my 40s I have been standing 40+ a week while working for about 8 years

standing has helped my back so much, I technically have a desk job for my gainful employment but have a standing desk.sitting will kill you add in stress and you can blow a disk sitting in your chair stressing..

hey man.
you need to do what you can do.
I fractured 3 veratbrie in my back on easter sunday. the first 4 weeks were tough but I wasn't dead. I could still move some but I paid for it later that night but I got things done.
I will be 63 on june 7..

its prolly 90% healed but im not doing any acrobatics yet. do what you can do a little at a time. don't lay back and feel sorry for yourself.

Re: I need a hobby - 05/24/19 04:18 AM

My VA physical therapist after putting me through a few weeks of stretching exercises and teaching me back & belly strengthening exercises; told me that if every one with back pain would do yoga that she would be out of a job. Sure enough most of the stuff had me doing is in a basic yoga routine.
So as a new hobby take up yoga. Like the other guy said stand up, sitting is the worst thing I can do to that nerve.
I'll also pass along that an ice pack is your friend. Frozen corn will work, but I like the hot/cold jell packs.

I have used a chiropractor for years and it was always easier on me and him if i had a few drinks before going to be adjusted...relax a little and adjustments were a lot less painful...

Ozarks on Netflix is good.

Leather work is fun, even if making just a plain sheath or bit guard.

As mentioned, reloading and fly tying are great ways to pass some time.
Build a moonshine still and make some sweet feed whisky.

Having back pain is a great time to start up that opioid addiction you’ve been putting off.

Yikes!

I am glad to report I am doing considerably better today. I managed to get some work on and take a walk, plan was to make dandelion wine but the flowers are pretty closed up since it is raining.

When I went to the chiropractor he put some electric pads of some sort on my very lower back, he told me I could turn it up a bit if I wanted, I cranked that sucker up until my legs were involuntary flopping around like I was having a seizure, pretty sure that loosened it up.

I appreciate all the advice, I know you guys encouraged me to get out and do stuff but it was a pretty intense pain that I could not escape from, I did as much stretching as I could and that helped I am sure.

Re: I need a hobby - 05/24/19 06:02 PM

there are times when you can't but as soon as you can get up , start and keep moving.

helpful hint , sweat , as in wear enough clothing whatever you do that your contently in a state of sweating. cold and sciatica don't mix well , it is most often a shortening of the tendons that cause the big muscle in your butt to pull on the sciatic nerve bundle as it passes through it. but remember to drink lots of water.

for me bouncing down a rough 2 lane first thing in the morning in a cold van , I could hardly stand up when I would get to work.

in my truck I have some chunks of foam pool noodle that I put one under my right leg under the knee this keeps the leg strait , If I don't I need about 50 feet to walk upright again and each time I get back in the truck it is like hitting the reset on the pain and leg not working right.

it is a lot of learning what will set it off and finding another way to do without setting off the sciatica.

core strength is HUGE very very important , any time you are feeling good , be standing it helps to maintain that strength

if they do give you prescription narcotics aka Oxy , remember to take a stool softener and a pint of water with every oxy . my doctor apparently forgot to mention that when he wrote me the script back in 2003 and I got to learn the Hard way.

Don't know how nuisance trapping works there. In Ohio you take an on line test and there is a 100 plus page pdf Manual on line to study. Don't matter if you are going to certify or not, you can learn a thing or 3 reading the manual.

Re: I need a hobby - 05/26/19 03:12 AM

I recently took up rod building and I have to say it is really enjoyable. Not much physical work to it and you can do it sitting down if you have a nice bench.

You could also consider net making. Goo many YouTube videos on the subject now

550 cord crafts is another good one.$50 worth of 550 cord buckles, clips or sling swivels can have you pretty well pre occupied for a good while. You can make everything from bracelets to belts go slings and my favorite leashes.

If you have a smart phone get you a scanning app and make digital copies of old books. I've started doin it with some of the really old trapping books in my collection and it can be pretty satifying

there is a show no netflix called meateater that you might like

I would make sure every knife in the house is sharp
then i would clean all the guns whether they needed it or not

if i was still laid up after that, I reckon I'd start cleaning and treating my boots, sort my socks, throw out socks and underbritches which have holes in them

then organize tools and trapping stuff

if i was still in a bad way, I think I've have to take up knitting

There are other requirements to getting a nuisance license as well. Didnt get in to them, just suggested reading the manual as a "hobby"
