Fur Harvesters sale this morning

Fur Harvesters sale this morning - 05/25/19 12:45 PM

Talked with a broker at the sale a few minutes ago and he indicated good quality beaver are selling very strong. Probably not enough to put a smile on a trappers face but it's definitely pointed up after five years. We'll see.

I didn't catch the biggest selects but heard the rest. It wasn't too bad IMO. GLad I had what I did there.

Someone just came in and PT'd the fisher, way below valuations. No I don't have prices. He said way below valuations. I should have given a buy order in advance, snooze and lose. I am getting play by play texts, but it's hard to keep up.

Finishing up the coyotes right now 1:05 Eastern time, he said coyote trappers should be happy as usual, no prices for me as he was busy bidding. Nancy, I asked about rats and he did not watch the auction, but he said he observed people pouring over rats prior, and heard good clearance, that's all folks.

Nice thing about selling hatter beaver is you know exactly how much they are going to sell for - around here a $9-10 average on the hide and about $8 average on castor per beaver.

She may be blind to my looks, but she ain't blind to the fur pieces I put in front of her. Most of the damage is just rubs. I work around them. In the end there is maybe a 5 percent loss of usable fur. So, I sell her a good blanket for $100 to $110 and damaged for $90 to $100. I took a 5% hit on the deal, not the 50 to 60% hit you take at an Auction.

Do FHA shippers have access to the sale in progress, or the catalogs to see prices and clearances, or do they only see prices on thier own good that sell? Just wondering about the reporting process as it seems information from these sales trickles out slowly.

In about 7-10 days, FHA will post a catalog on,ins with prices the lot sold for. 0.00 = Bought Back = not sold.

It most likely means that no one looking at this thread shipped any there and FHA hasn't published a report yet.

Your coon at NAFA will sell in the nest week to ten days. Chill out, what you get is what you are going to get.

Actually, we would still be selling cheap at a buck an inch compared to 1980 prices. A 60 dollar 1980 beaver would be like getting $186 average today in inflation adjusted dollars.

The guys who didn't hang up their traps are getting about $7 in 1980 dollars for good blankets at Auction. I have not raised my price on beaver in 25 years, not a very good business model. smile

The later it gets the more nervous I would be if I had any amount of coon at auction. I sold the last seven 3x C SLD for 9.50 each. Can I ask why you sold them on this auction or NAFA. Were they holdovers from the march sale? That was the only coon I had not sold so I have zero on the books now. LLL
Posted By: Rat Masterson

Re: Fur Harvesters sale this morning - 05/27/19 12:35 PM

LLL maybe it's not late but early, who knows. I do know our coon here are to heavy for coat liners, but will work for coyote substitute. Don't think there will be much of a market move on NAFAs auction and FHA didn't have enough to gauge anything.
Posted By: lee steinmeyer

Re: Fur Harvesters sale this morning - 05/27/19 01:20 PM

Last year, the coon in the May auction averaged fifty cents more than in the March auction. I did right at sixteen at the March auction.

This year I did twenty at the March, and twelve at the May. I can note that I didn't have much of a sampling on either auction this year, as I had a minor surgery on my ankle and couldn't trap through Dec and Jan., so basiclly was just the coon caught in coyote sets both early and late.

How cool is it that a Tman member in Nova Scotia sends his bear Hide to FHA auction and it is bought by a Tman member in Idaho. Small world.

It would be even cooler to know where the Hide ends up once it is tanned and sold to a customer.

How about it CDA trapper - do you think it is possible you could report back when this happens?

How about it CDA trapper - do you think it is possible you could report back when this happens?

I know! I thought it was pretty crazy as well. I would also love to know where it ends up.

I'll be sure to throw a tag on it when the shipment comes in and see where it decides to go!

Got a few official numbers on beaver, price up a strong 30%+ across the board, better northern skins saw the best increase. Basis was $60 on dark, $44 or $46 on brown heavy blankets. Fisher and Otter were the toughest items, very cheap. Everything else was pretty good, encouraging!

Anyone track the beaver prices per lot for the better goods? Prices haven't been posted by FHA yet.

. Could be right Dave. It isn’t like between selling now and earlier anyone has lost much. It isn’t great to see NAFA has a top evaluation of only 32 dollars on the best coon in the world. I have heard that buyers can sell small coon and big damaged ones right now. Beaver market? What beaver market?

Dirt, Did you notice that at last weeks FH sale they separated XXL and Xlg good slts into heavies and semi's separately, that's new.

No I didn't look at the May Catalog. That would be proper to sort them that way IMO. Since SLT's are Shearable beaver according to the auctions( if they are HVY or SEMI) it would make sense to separate them that way for buyers looking for shearable beaver.

Re: Fur Harvesters sale this morning - 05/29/19 03:44 AM

I’m skeptical about any beaver market until I see actual sale results. You can cherry pick all you want but I still haven’t seen beaver worth putting up at today’s market

Re: Fur Harvesters sale this morning - 05/29/19 04:56 AM

A lot of trappers would agree with you Blackhammer.
I still trap and put up beaver for fur, castor and bait for other furbearers and to keep my trapping trails from flooding out.
I enjoy putting up beaver, but would not trap them hard(big numbers) until the price goes up some.Skinning a pile of beaver day after day wears on a trapper after a month or so.

Re: Fur Harvesters sale this morning - 05/29/19 01:45 PM

Beaver are not necessarily worth the effort to catch them for a profit yet. Rest assured though that day will come, upward movement in price is a good thing after five years of decreasing prices. Shearable beaver has done to well at retail not to have demand, it's ranch mink prices at retail that affect the price of most consumers purchases. I will guess that good quality Northern beaver will see a steady small increase with each sale, flatter long hair beaver, I have no idea.

To much processing work is what make it not worth it an unless catch lot beaver, not worth it, if not for caster prices , definately not, meduim beaver at $3.50, before commision toke out, in last nafa sale, trap a few for fun hopefully in fall , along with coon is what do

Re: Fur Harvesters sale this morning - 05/29/19 02:12 PM

Beaver may not be worth a lot but in my neck of the woods if you're trapping parcels with water and NOT trapping beaver, you won't be trapping there long!!!!

Worrying over the auction house sales dont make trapping more fun either.

Sounds like we are going to lose the" sell the carcass to mink ranchers" market soon.

That’s fox ranchers, dirt. And that market is too small anyway.

The market to sell anything to mink ranchers has plummeted already.

Btw, how many cents per pound is anyone selling their beaver meat for?

Re: Fur Harvesters sale this morning - 05/29/19 04:50 PM

Mink99 the carcusses are sold by if it takes two hands to lift=20$, and grunt with one hand =15$, one in each hand =10$ each. Helps when you have a spring bear season;
and a lazy guide service to sell to.

Re: Fur Harvesters sale this morning - 05/29/19 04:59 PM

Guess that trappers aren’t the only ones to try and utilize carcasses.

I don't know? Might be able to get it for 5 to 10 cents a pound or free from hobby trappers? When my dog eats it, his fur gets real silky and shines.
