According to the clover in the picture it a small critter. But the long back hair, round tail and long white whiskers and small ears and big head them parts look nutria to me. I don't know.

I don't know how smart nutria are, but I know they can be pretty vicious. If one catches you sneaking up on him when he's out in the field grazing it's not unheard of for them to charge at you.

You got that right. Most fur bearers bluff a charge. Not a nutria. If he makes a move, he's coming! I had one charge me while I was pulling on the chain to extract him from a bush. He came out alright. Right at my face. Fortunately I had a defense implement in hand and was able to defend myself at close range. I will never forget how large and orange their teeth are.
