French Muskrat

My Son and Daughter in Law are in Europe for two weeks. He sent me this picture titled "French Muskrat"

Never seen something like this before.

That's a nutrea. They must have planted them there too! Blondes have more fun!

I didnt think it was a muskrat.

White nutria, never seen one of them before.

Nutria perhaps but I was thinking guinea pig at first.

Doesn't look like any nutria I ever seen.
Young of the year maybe.

According to the clover in the picture it a small critter. But the long back hair, round tail and long white whiskers and small ears and big head them parts look nutria to me. I don't know.

Nutria, all in Europe are descendant of fur farm escapees, hence the odd color.

That French rat looks like a sissy, where's the white flag.

There is a water vole in the UK that is dark like a muskrat and it swims. It is a little smaller than a muskrat. Maybe it is related?

That is a filthy baby nutria. Not that it is filthier than other nutria. They are all filthy, weird acting, silly animals. Tied for last with possums for the dumbest.

His name is Cracker!

Yeah but they get dirty quicker.

French Rat with a White Flag !

I don't know how smart nutria are, but I know they can be pretty vicious. If one catches you sneaking up on him when he's out in the field grazing it's not unheard of for them to charge at you.

We have tons of them here. They are trapped year round as are the muskrats. Never seen one that color.

You got that right. Most fur bearers bluff a charge. Not a nutria. If he makes a move, he's coming! I had one charge me while I was pulling on the chain to extract him from a bush. He came out alright. Right at my face. Fortunately I had a defense implement in hand and was able to defend myself at close range. I will never forget how large and orange their teeth are.
