Looking to become an apprentice - 06/25/19 09:42 AM

Hi my name is Pero Gurovich.
I currently live in South Africa, I'm 17 and looking to become a Trapper.
I'm looking for someone to take me in and teach me the skills i will need, I am not looking for any payment but a bed and a plate of food will be needed.
I will do hard labor work in exchange for said bed food and knowledge. Im looking to move to Alaska once i get citizenship

If you are willing to help me achieve my goal please send me an email.

Jackals in the zoo here look a lot like coyotes. Gemsbok imported from Africa to N.M. are called oryx here. I am confident you will need to create your own system for trapping what ever it is your after in S. Africa. Our tactics will only be a starting place for what will be effective there.

I am not sure what the program is called but several S. African families I knew worked up in North Dakota for some decent sized farmers. If you are a hard worker with a good work ethic, I'd say there would be quite a few farmers willing to provide you a good job, bed, plate, housing, vehicle etc. You likely would have a little time you could trap in your spare time. H-2A program.

Welcome to the forum! There's tons of knowledge to be gained here. Take your time and read through the Archives.

Are you wanting to trap in South Africa or come to the US/Canada? If you're staying in SA, maybe you can help us help you by letting us know what kind of animals you have over there you'll be targeting.

no, there are very few quality fur bearers and those that are good fur bearers are illegal to trap with quickkill traps, plus ive never hard of a place to sell your fur in my area, added on you must own all the land you trap on.

Welcome to trapperman. The program or something similar to what TreedaBlackDog mentioned might be your best bet. Find work on a farm or something similar here and then trap in your free time. That might mean running your lines in the evenings after you get done working. Finding an experienced mentor to help you learn to trap would be good, as you mentioned. It's a steep learning curve, otherwise. A learning curve I'm still on.

Just take a holiday to mexico and come in to the usa that way-they let you right in and pay for everything.

Or move to Canada. They're next door to Alaska and probably have a more liberal immigration plan

Where in South Africa ??

I have an uncle who has lived in Port Elizabeth for many many years, since the early 1970s I believe, he came over from Germany during the mid or late 1960’s because things were not so well back in the Fatherland…. and then eventually settled where he is today.

Anyhow, I am still reading this book which my uncle gave to me for Christmas in 1973, I was too young to read and understand it back then, as I was only 8 years old, but today I find great value in this amazing story about a very special dog who goes into the bushveld on hunting trips…….

I wish you much luck and good health/success should you make it out to Alaska.

Trapperman is my favorite forum, the folks here are the real deal, all genuine……

May you enjoy your visits here on Trapperman, as there is an incredible amount of knowledge available for you to read at your leisure !!

One question if I may: Why Alaska ??

Is there something about this place which greatly interests you ??

Climate/geography/terrain will be much different than what you are used too !!

Cheers friend…….. and welcome !!
