NE-MO Guys - 07/01/19 11:47 AM

Attempting to figure a possible route from southeastern South Dakota to Springfield MO and the NTA. Looks like !-29 is open as far south as Council Bluffs NE but not further. How would one work their way south to Springfield? Is a loop into eastern KS south around KS City possible? Ideas???

look at 71 highway just north of St Joseph Missouri an it routes up north of Clarinda IA to Atlantic IA and you can jog back to 29 - that is how it was when we moved to North Dakota in 2011 - you can run 71 south then most of the way or get off and go 13 or 65

Yeah just take 71 through Maryville and pick I-29 back up in St Joe.

You guys are pretty sure that 71 is not closed in northwestern Mo and that I-29 is open from St Joe to KS City? The Mo state maps show lots of closures in that corner of the state.

yes, its open - if you want to avoid KC - you can take 435 East just south of Platte City - that will swing you around the north end of KC and then drift to 435 south and once there you can decide if you want to get back on 71 and head south or jog over to 13. 13 route is probably more scenic and will take you over Truman Reservoir

Yes I-29 is open from St Joe to KC. On MODOTs map they show nothing on 71, I haven't heard anything, and it never floods.

I just came from south Dakota Saturday. 29 is open all the way. no detours. There are a couple of spots where it goes to 1 lane, but traffic moved thru pretty good.

Thanks Danny. Obviously if 29 stays open I will take it but the route down 75 in KS appears shorter than swinging east into Iowa. What kind of a road is 75 in KS?

That's the best route down through Ks. Course you could come down 81 or any of those major hyways down to I70 and go south on 75 from Topeka. After all the devastation in Ne, I know for awhile the only way north and south through Ne was to go through Valentine, so that also may be an issue. I haven't heard whether any of those bridges in Ne are open yet or not! Travel safe!

75 and 54 are both real good highways some small towns but but can flip right through. 13 is nonstop to Springfield

Used to sell fur to Bud Keller in Collins, one of the nicest guys ever. He loved everything about the fur trade. Bud passed and his daughter Wanda closed the shop, end of an era. Had an old fur baler that probably had seen skins from Chouteaus era, maybe not but it was old.

Getting on 13 at the 54 junction with it will save some miles as opposed to 71, as you need to go back East more the further South you go on 71.

There are limited services on 29 from highway 34 in Iowa to St Joseph. Most exits are closed. There’s a DOT sign at highway 34 warning you of the limited exits.
