Beaver Trap Selection?

Beaver Trap Selection? - 07/20/19 02:48 AM

What do you prefer as far as foot holds? Double long springs or coil springs? I like that the double longs bed better... any other pros and cons? I don't really care for conibears but have some just in case. I have 5 #4 victor double longs but I'd have to spend money on pit pans to add pan tension..or I can sell them and buy some #4 coil springs...what are yalls thoughts? also, I'm trying snares this years as well..

Re: Beaver Trap Selection? - 07/20/19 03:59 AM

lets see-I got about 4 dozen 330's,and 3 dozen footholds.Footholds don't get used much but when I need one for a specific problem beaver I use a 5 bridger longspring, although I have a lot of old #4 victors that have taken quite a few beaver.
Whatever trap you use make sure the springs are good and strong. That applies to bodygrips and footholds.

What are your issues with the MB750’s?

NO-BS Beaver Extreme for me. I have run a several of them and am in the process phasing out my 750s and replacing them with beaver extermes.

issues = hard to keep pan tension, tiny levers, they lock up tight but i've had a bunch of them break now

#4 Victor longsprings are my favourite. Bought 4 bridger #5 coilsprings and man I hate them. Set the pan tension, and every time I’ve set them they’ve been at the bottom of the cable empty. Every dam time. Can’t figure it out

If your experience is like mine you'll love the snares and wish you would have used them sooner.
As far as foot traps I don't run them much so I haven't the experience with a bunch of different types but the one's mentioned above are good traps.

I've used MB750s, Duke #4 OSCS and Victor #4 DLS. They all catch beaver but the MB750s are my favorites. Those TS-85s seem like a really nice trap as well.

I really dig the 330s, but I'm considering footholds as well... Not entirely sure though. Nothing's moving down here

I’m a mb750 guy, body grips here are a pain to use do to the laws, I made a pair setters for when the beaver is in the trap and I can’t my hands positioned right to release the trap. I’ve used snares with success where I’ve had a good to set them.

No 4 or 14 jump or sleepy creek 41/2.

The old traps without an adjustable pan you can either file a miles trigger into it or do like I do and place a toothpick size twig under the pan, works for me

I prefer fairly light pan tension on beaver footholds.

By any chance had that trap had vinegar bath(s) without baking soda afterward?

Re: Beaver Trap Selection? - 07/22/19 10:52 AM

That trap is a year and a half old, never been in vinegar just painted it and started catching beaver. I've got half a dozen that look like this now.

Re: Beaver Trap Selection? - 07/22/19 01:14 PM

I use Jakes and MB750's. Both with rubber jaws. Nothing against the 750's but always seem to reach for the Jakes first. They will swallow a back foot and they have a lot of holding power.

man i hate you guy's.6 1/2 " max even for beaver in PA.

Re: Beaver Trap Selection? - 07/22/19 08:18 PM

I had the MB-750s, Bridger #5 long spring, and CDR7.5.

The CDR is the best of the three. Although, I have heard the springs on the MB have been beefed up and hold better now. I lost too many beaver in them when they had the weaker springs.
