Re: I知 starting to think - 07/23/19 07:17 PM

Being in the construction business and living 20 minutes from the US border, most people here are able to use both systems. In Canada, it is customary to use metric dimensions on shop drawings even if materials are typically noted in imperial (eg. 3/4" plywood becomes 18mm plywood). For US projects, most use feet/inches but there are some components like glass that are typically denoted in metric.

Most people here measure the outside temperature and run their cooking stoves in degrees F. I have yet to meet a single Canadian who would tell you to bake a cake at 176 deg C... most would simply say 350F.

I don't much care for metric in the building trades as the dimensions are generally in millimeters or meters so they can get clumsy (8' is 2439mm)

Yeah,

But The bigger question is:

Will Indiana still let you ride your Metric built Dune Buggies

I wouldn't wish the metric system on anyone, personally, although the young people now have no problem with it. If I recall right, just another trudeau imposition. You guys are lucky and stood your ground. I see you also sell your furs with no apparent problem.

Re: I知 starting to think - 07/23/19 09:14 PM

Seems the old Babylonians used a 60 system instead of a 10 system like ours. But we did hang on to the 60 minutes and 60 seconds in our clock. I have a lot of junk like that in my head that is worth absolutely nothing, lol.

Now when you picture a American 44DD against a Europe 100F, I guess that is just a matter of opinion.

Re: I知 starting to think - 07/24/19 10:44 AM

When I was still working, I worked in the maintenance/design/engineering shop. We often had to switch between Metric and Imperial measurements. Half of the machines we had in the plant were built on the Metric system and half were built on Imperial. We were much using the multipliers 25.4 and .03937 to convert. The Mill had digitals making it very easy to jump between the two systems. Once you start using the Metric system, and get used to it, it is a very nice system. You just had to make sure you did not forget what system you were using when you were on a project.

Re: I知 starting to think - 07/24/19 02:39 PM

When we were born, none of us knew either system. If you grew up with one system or the other, it's easy for you. I grew up with inches and pounds, so that's what's easy for me. That being said, as a mechanic if I need a wrench one size bigger or smaller than the one I grabbed, it's a lot easier to go from 18 to 19 (counting by ones) then to remember 1/16ths and convert it to something lower, like 11/16ths to 3/4ths, for example.

As a seasoned mechanic I can look at any nut or bolt and grab a wrench for it with nearly 100% accuracy.

I believe the push to go metric's goal was to ultimately end up with a one world economy. It is easier for businesses to sell when everything is measured the same way.

Breaking News !! This just In:

It has been discovered that BOCO may be an alien !! laugh

We're not talking an Illegal alien, but an actual outer space alien !! laugh

This would account for his freakish appearance, and other-worldly views

on popular culture, historical records, and current events.

I guess he must be a survivor of the Roswell crash site,

and an escapee/fugitive from Area 51. laugh

Re: I知 starting to think - 07/25/19 01:02 PM

I was teaching a foreign exchange student to measure using our system. When I told her our inch was broken down into 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, etc... she she smiled and said, "Well that's very practical, isn't it?
When we used an engineers scale, and things were decimally divided, she asked why, even if we wanted to stay with inches, feet, yards, etc., we didn't break things into tenths, 1/100s, etc? The only good answer for her was tradition and stubbornness.

Once you get used to the metric system it is as easy as working with our money system-10 cents in a dime, 100 cents in a dollar.
