I think I got a good deal (canoe)

I think I got a good deal (canoe) - 08/05/19 03:23 PM

As some of you might remember, my brother-in-law sunk my 10' flat bottom boat last November. It was retrieved from the river, but the towing company that retrieved it, wanted WAY to much money to get it back (they wanted $205.00 plus the $75.00 to release it from the sheriff's department. I paid $60.00 for it about 10 years ago). Well yesterday, as my family and I were out and about, we came across a yard sale with a canoe out front. After checking it over, I asked what he wanted for it. I was told $150.00. I got him down to $125.00 and loaded it on my wife's van.
The canoe is a 14' Old Town "Pathfinder". Nice, wide bottom. Weighs only 57#. Plenty of room for a trapping canoe (primary reason I bought it). After looking them up, I see that they regularly go for around $500+ used! I think I did good!
Anyone have experience with this model? [Linked Image]

personally I think your brother in law owes you 280 dollars and he should go pick up your boat for you or find and buy you a new one, that is the price of borrowing a boat , you break it you fix it.

but I think you got a fair deal on the canoe , looks like it is missing the middle seat and a bit banged up but should work

almost no canoe here in working shape goes for less than 225

Yes, I agree that he owes me and he should have just got my boat back. But, you ain't going to get anything from a meth addict. And no, I didn't know he was using drugs when I loaned him my boat.
I plan on calling him and letting him know that I bought a canoe for $125.00. I'm going to see if he will man up and pay for his mistake. Ever since he sunk my boat, I have cut ties with him.

GCP- yes, it is missing the middle seat. I am going to make a new one out of wood and notch it to fit. Easy fix. And yes, she has a few scrapes but it gives a little character! grin
It is used, and it's not the prettiest, but the same goes for the lost flat bottom. The biggest difference is the weight. This is 57# and easily loaded/unloaded from my truck by myself. The flat bottom...not so much. Could be done, and was, but not easily. The canoe holds more weight also.

yup drugs ruin a lot of families , a co-worker had a cousin on meth who was robbing their grandmother blind , truly and awful substance that makes a person rob their own grandmother.

Looks good to me. The only part of the canoe I care about is the bottom. They get torn up on the river with the rocks.

So the towing company pulled your boat out of the river and never got paid?

Sort of. Since nobody paid the ridiculous price to get my boat back, the boat became theirs. They can keep it or sell it. Either way, they won't get $205.00 for it from ANYONE. The boat isn't worth that much.

that is a good deal on that boat assuming it doesnt need any major repairs.

never had a problem with any old town canoes - had a disco for years, and currently have an old penobscot.

That wasn't the price for the boat. That was their price for the services they provided.

I don't feel too much sympathy for the towing company.

Decent price but personally I'd hold out for a better, royalex, boat. Of all the possible materials plastic aka crosslink is my least favorite as it is bad to oilcan and flex while under way. Note, that model has a full center seat for that very reason.

M.Magis- I understand that, but it wasn't MY bill to pay. Even if it was, I wouldn't have paid that much to get that boat back. It wasn't worth it.

I have the identical canoe. bought it new many years ago. we use it for rat trapping where a boat/motor cant go. push it along while wading. carries a LOT of weight. itll do well for you.

Can't go wrong with an Old Town. 30 yrs old and still kicking. Fishing, duck boat (Susquehanna sneak boat), trapping boat. Takes a licking an keeps on ticking. Plus they float upside down and when full of water. Not on purpose!!. Comes in handy to hang onto when yr feet won't touch bottom.
