Re: 500 Rounds of .22 Ammo - 08/10/19 03:02 AM

if I am shooting targets for score I want CCI standard velocity 25 to 29 a brick

555 for other stuff been getting the 555 for about 21-23 dollars

thunderbolts , are a dirty ammo even in a bolt action , but I got a few bricks of them that were so dirty the 10/22 would only run for about 70 rounds after a cleaning before it was a jam-o-matic the same gun would run 300+ of the 555 or cci

I have a 10/22 that has shot THOUSANDS of rounds (all different brands of ammo) and has NEVER been cleaned. It has never had a single malfunction either. Do I recommend this? NO, but after so long, I've became curious to see how much this gun can take.

Im with you. Most all the bulk pack stuff is crappy at best.I like the CCI standards for plinking and in my trapping pistol. My .22 longuns are sighted in for CCI stingers.I too many duds and shots that just don't sound right with the bulk stuff.None of that with the CCIs.

Re: 500 Rounds of .22 Ammo - 08/11/19 02:00 PM

During the Obama era when guns and ammo were crazy cost wise or couldn't find. My son was living in Seattle, job reason only. Part time he worked for a large sporting goods store, compressing files. In WI I couldn't find AR's, 22 ammo, etc. It was readily available out there, cheap comparatively and with his employee discount it was really affordable. When he left out there I drove back with him and his family flew back. In his car we had 22,550 rounds of ammo and 11 guns. Were set for a while yet.

Agree with you about the quality of Thunderbolts, as Ive had around 10% failure rate with them.
This was with 3 seperate rifles.
Removed the bullet and there was no priming compound.

Re: 500 Rounds of .22 Ammo - 08/11/19 04:55 PM

Storage really does make a difference in 22lr ammunition

I had 2 cases same manufacture date purchased at the same time had very few duds year 1 the ammo was 325 round boxes of federal auto match a case was 3250 round we went from 0-2 duds per box to 7+ duds per box the second year. since we used about 5000 rounds in year one we had about 1500 round to use up the next spring and it was getting almost painful to use if you figure there are 32 ten round magazines in a box of 325 nearly half of all mags had a dud in them

the difference was that they were stored in a tool box in a van for 1 year

22lr ammo is best stored in a controlled humidity and temperature environment. if the ammo is stored in a heated and air conditioned space it is fine in the cardboard boxes or sealed and kept cool like in a basement on a shelf off the floor in ammo cans with good gaskets.

It's a good deal IF it is accurate enough in your firearm for what you intend to use it for.

Re: 500 Rounds of .22 Ammo - 11/02/19 09:09 PM

I have been buying the Remington 22 Golden Bullets, $52.00 for 1,400. I have shot two buckets in a S&W snub nose. I have had more dud with cci than the Remingtons and I have shot far less cci. But I agree the bulk ammo is dirty.

My local Walmart has the thunderbolts same price 14.99. I use them on my trap line some. Our of my H&R 755 single shot auto eject 22 rifle.

Re: 500 Rounds of .22 Ammo - 11/02/19 09:52 PM

Years ago , I stocked up on Remington Thunderbolts. I was in Florida in a Kmart. They had them on sale for $8.80 a brick. This was a common price at the time , on sale. I bought 2 cases (20 bricks)
Took them and put them away in ammo cans. Shot some but still had a good stash.

Years later , during when the price skyrocketed and you would almost be lucky to find some and people were paying some crazy prices when did find some , I sold the bulk of it all to a gun dealer for $30 a brick. He probably flipped it for even more.

Currently waiting for it to bottom out some more, then I'll resupply. Still have the empty ammo cans.

I joke with people , I tell them I don't invest in gold or silver , I invest in lead and brass.
$8.80 to $30.00 is a very good return on an investment , better than most stocks.

Re: 500 Rounds of .22 Ammo - 11/03/19 02:56 AM

I stocked up on several brands yrs ago but found a lot of them had loose bullets in the casing which I’ve found before. I’ve found 1 in 10 miss fire but I’m ok with that since I only shoot them out of my revolver to dispatch. I’m getting them for about $15 a brick here so I’ll probably stock up again before 2020.

Local supply store here has the same bullets for $24 this week (500), another place a few weeks ago had the Federal Black box 1600 rounds for $49.

The reason I bumped this thread to the top is so I could see the going price for .22 ammo. I am not an ammo geek so it can be tricky to know a good price when you see one.

$.03/round is about as good as you'll find.

I’m told all the .17 wsm is made by Winchester and my Bmag likes the 25gr. I have a minimum of three non fires
Per box of 25. I suspect the quality control of Winchester rimfire rounds is very poor. I think they are doing a very poor job of spinning the primer powder into the casings. Rimfire s are pretty simple rounds, finding problems should be easy.
I would never buy any Winchester ammo if there were options.

Yea I remember few years back when 22 was impossible to find. People stood in line every thurs here at our Walmart because they sold 10 bricks . I walked past and one old dude said " I got 10,000 rounds of 22 under my bed" . I ask him how long was he going to live? That was one reason it was hard to find. They have them sitting beside cash register now in 3 local stores.

Re: 500 Rounds of .22 Ammo - 11/03/19 03:53 PM

Had a old box of Xperts that I was shooting years ago the price was under $10 for 500 so they were old stock. Had fits with my S/W .22 pistol then I put new bullets through it and it worked fine I figured the Experts had lost their power over the years sitting in the gun case.

agreed, Thunderbolts are dirty shooters. CCI burn cleaner and are more accurate for me out of a 10/22 and the Walther UZI.

Hmmmm.....not trying to rain on anyone's parade , but the old adage , if it sounds too good to be true , it is not.

Really good price , almost too good.
Anyone notice the picture shows a box of 50ct ?

Any chance this may be a typo on Midway's fault ?
On the website they show a separate price for a cardboard box of 50 vs a plastic box of 100.

I'm wondering if this is correct. If it is , great deal. But something doesn't look right.

Just sayin.......
Hope I'm wrong and it is that cheap.
Just an observation.
