Yeah he ought to look pretty good out of velvet. He’d look even better hanging on my wall!

Re: 2019 bucks - 08/14/19 11:32 PM

I am trying to get a number on him but kinda hard he looks real impressive turned a tad to the side. I figure 160? Maybe gross 170. Sure hope you get him. He is a good deer and I would kill him even if he was only 130.

Give him another year and he’ll be mature!!!

Just kidding I had to say that as no one else has yet

Re: 2019 bucks - 08/15/19 02:57 AM

With that pot belly, he is in his prime. He probably won't improve with another year behind him.

Re: 2019 bucks - 08/15/19 03:19 AM

Nice deer! He may look 180 in velvet but my guess is he'll look 170 hard horned and will shrink to 160s dead. I do think he's on the younger side as a mature buck which means he may get bigger if he gives you the slip this year. I personally sure wouldn't pass on him. Me and my boy got glass on a couple nice deer this weekend, a really nice typical 12 that I think is 170+ and a super wide 10 I seen last year. The ten is pushing 24" wide but short tines maybe 6 to 8" tines but this years he's got a clubby looking drop tine on the left side. Hoping we get alot of the corn harvested in the next 2 or 3 weeks and I can get them on some cams.

Nice deer, looks to be about 3 1/2 years old to me.

After you kill him keep his lower jaw bone and you will know for sure...

Re: 2019 bucks - 08/15/19 04:50 PM

The new deal now is the two bottom middle front teeth. They say its 90% accurate where tooth wear is only like 70%. You pull the 2 teeth send them to a lab they cut them and count the rings. They say every spring and fall they get a growth ring. It's pretty neat deal look it up.

Re: 2019 bucks - 08/15/19 05:07 PM

The biggest deer will gross in the 180 class. But with all the kickers and stickers he will net mid 160's typical. IF you kill him have him scored non-typical also . I would guess him at 5 1/2 MAAAAYbe 6 1/2. If he doesn't get injured and has the right nutrients he will grow some next year but that is no guarantee...................
As for the other deer 3 1/2 at most . Let him walk

But with that said . The big deer is a 12 pt plus. When you try to score 12 pt it gets tricky that extra 2 points fool some people into guessing lower than the deer will score............

Very nice! And daylight pics even. I have only had a couple daylight pics of my bucks above. They usually hit the corn just after dark and then again just before the sun comes up.

The problem with using these pictures to judge an August buck is that the pics in that chart were taken close to the peak of the rut, when the necks are swollen and the fur is much fuller. The low belly seen in the OP's pics is indicative of an old buck. His neck will get so big during the rut that it will look like his chest begins under his chin.

Re: 2019 bucks - 08/17/19 09:31 PM

Summer range and fall range can be miles apart. These summer pics of velvet bucks are encouraging, but dont get your hopes up just yet...unless your season opens in late August or 1st week of September.

I ride this rollercoaster every summer with velvet buck pics and can count on one hand the bucks I killed in the fall that I photographed in the summer. And there have only been 3 or 4 that were killed in same area where there pics were taken in August.

My 2 best bucks just started shedding velvet past few days. Both of them are 4.5 year olds. They disappeared from a feeder they were coming to every night for a month. I checked another camera about 1/2 mile away and both were there but not together...one at feeder August 15th...one there yesterday. Both have velvet hanging from there racks...about half peeled off. This is right on schedule for these south Ga older bucks. The younger ones will be shed by 1st week of September...mostly.

One of these bucks will leave my property in the next couple weeks..he has done this past 3 years...I dont know where he goes.....he will make a couple appearances in late October but after that wont see him again until later December.

The other shooter has remained on my place throughout the fall and winter. Hope he does it this time. I couldn't get my timing right on him last season. I would hunt one morning and nothing. Next morning check camera and there he was at 8 am. We played that game all season...he won. He was a shooter last year at 3.5. Even better at 4.5.

Good luck!

Re: 2019 bucks - 08/17/19 10:19 PM

I have killed a buck every year that I had in velvet. I also have killed almost one every year that I have never seen before. The ones i have in velvet may not stay around every day but will be back through at least once a week when late October is here. That's pretty much the same with every one I know. If my buddy has dome nice buck a few miles away i usually get a few pics of them in Nov. And he usually get pics of the bucks I have too. They come back through as long as they dont get killed in some way.
I did have a friend that had a good buck he watched for 5 years ever winter he would be gone and would not return till October he finally killed him and he was old as heck. I think he had a pattern with the pressures in the summer and spring the place where my friend hunted was being hayed and had a lot of cattle ran on it then come fall things got quite there.

Man I miss those bruisers. Haven't seen deer like that around here since around 2009 when the wasting disease ran rampant. I had one very similar to that one camera all summer and those big boys seem to disappear once that first shot rings out around here. Nice pictures.

Same here.
I used to love running trail came all summer but have backed off.
The " Boyz" you see in August can be miles away once velvet is shed.
Not sure if the pics will post but I'll try.
This buck was a SUPER homebody all spring/ summer for years only to disappear once he shed velvet.
I have no idea where he went. [Linked Image]

I tried killing him as a 5 year old but didn't get him till he as 8.
1000' s of pics over a mineral lick over the years.

Bottom line. Some bucks will stay, some will move.
However, don't be discouraged if your not seeing good bucks now.
If your in a good area, bucks that summered miles away can show up anytime.

Understood but in my case all 4 bucks i killed off this property i have had velvet pics of. They may disappear during the rut but are always back in December which is when i killed 3 of them. I dont hold my breath for any buck but will be looking for them if i make it to December.

Re: 2019 bucks - 08/20/19 06:57 PM

Nice pics. I have had better success at targeting a buck when I don't put out cams until I start seeing scrapes. Find 4-5 scrapes and put a camera in front of them and in about a week you will know every shooter buck that is on your property.... Yes some may pass thru but the home bodies will work their scrape lines....

Have you been passing him up or you just haven't ever got a shot? I have a hard time passing them once they reach that size or a tad smaller. I shot a heck of a 3.5 year old and have kicked my self ever since. But there is no guarantee that they will make it that one more year so I am a fan of eating them while I can.

I had zero pics of him last year so i was surprised to see him this year at all. If i see him this season i will shoot him! My property is a smaller parcel so i don't pass up any mature deer. i know i wont see them the next season if i pass on them.
