Bee's sob"s

Bee's sob"s - 08/14/19 11:21 PM

Well there was a post on here a little while back concerning ground bee's, yellow jackets if you will.
I still get out on the ground as a land surveyor every chance I get and today was no different.
Was hacking just a little bit with a machete off the corner of a corn field to set a property corner when suddenly
things got exiting. I got stung about 30 times in the time it takes to type this. I never was a track star but between
bee's, cattle and irate property owners I have been known to set some land speed records.
Had to come home and rest after that today, dam near made me go to a hospital.
I have a plan for them guys very early tomorrow morning, although it will be 26 miles out of my way to work...…
It involves a pint of 90 octane gas , a match and raucous laughter.

They’re nasty, where I work they had two nest, we tried cobalt straight down the hole didnt kill them finally had to take brake cleaner to them. The match that was dropped down the hole afterwards may have helped. grin

I feel your pain, I own a tree service and climb daily. Last year in August I went up a oak tree and topped it and repelled down right on top of a hornets nest, and since I was still roped off to the tree they got me 42 times. I was on a mission the next morning and they got the worst end of the deal. Lol. Revenge is sweet

It's that time of year. I rolled over a tarp to have a yellow jacket nest come at me. Thankfully they only got me once, past the glove on my wrist. I was backpedaling to make a land speed record. Smothered them with a backhoe bucket of cinders.

Well I'll tell ya, a 64 year old man can still run a pretty quick 40, and I mean 40 acres when he steps on a yellow jacket nest.

Match not needed. Let that fuel soak in...

Re: Bee's sob"s - 08/15/19 12:42 AM

One time I was cutting brush around my bow blind with one of those folding saws and I ran into a nest of them. As they were biting, I was swatting my arm with the blade of the saw. Saw did more damage than the bees.

Glad you are ok.

They chase honey bees too.

Lighting the gas may only top kill and leave most of the underground nest not burned..as the fire burns off the fuel.

Dont set the woods on fire.

I hate yellowjackets!!!!

The last time I got nailed by them, I was 2 miles from my truck, digging ginseng. When they are fired up, they are like mini fighter jets, with bayonets! Glad you’re ok Zim.

Left eye swollen shut this morning, left ear is on fire, wrists and hands swollen and stiff. Going to miss a day of work for the first time in 35 years.
Going to have to wait another day to exact my revenge on those guys.

Re: Bee's sob"s - 08/15/19 11:48 AM

Yeah, I've gotten the same program several times cutting firewood. Both times I was focused on cutting with my chainsaw and suddenly felt the initial stings. At first it almost felt like a burn, then realized what was happening, then dropped the saw and ran.
A good "dab" of chainsaw gas and a match took care of them. Darn good thing I'm not allergic to bee stings as some folks are.

Re: Bee's sob"s - 08/15/19 01:30 PM

Had a nest them little buggers here in back yard last summer. Didn't get me but got the dog couple times one day. I went out early morning stuck a piece one inch conduit down the hole followed by liberal dose premithrin..Still had to dig them out hit again. But I managed to not even get nicked once.
I have battled them sucker several times in my life. First couple times when was kid I lost big time.

Re: Bee's sob"s - 08/15/19 01:45 PM

When I was a kid about 13-14 years old, I was coon hunting with an older guy (who owned the dogs) and a friend of mine. The dog trees a coon in a big hemlock that had a big brush pile around its base. The dog owner was in his late 70’s and had a hip in need of replacement but it was 1981 and they did not do many hip replacements in those days. He could hardly walk. Anyway, while looking up to try and find the coon, I was stung in the eyelid. All heck broke loose shortly thereafter and we were all sting a lot. I had 26 stings to my face and neck. My friend and I ran away at first but had to go back to get the old guy and the dogs, who did not want to leave that coon. It was a bad night!

Take care, Zim. If you need to go to clinic for extra help, do so.

Some people, after taking many hits , become hyper allergic and one more hit can put them in dire straights.

Trapstickman running in the swarm is one of my favourites that brings a smile to me, and shivers all at the same time !

That's a lot of stings Zim. I've never been hit that many times at once, maybe a dozen or so at most. I think rhat many would have made me take the rest of the day off too. grin

I go back at night and dump some gas down the hole. After a minute or two I light it. You get a nice six-inch flame that lasts sometimes more than ten minutes. It is very satisfying to sit there nursing my wounds while I imagine the death and destruction happening below.

Re: Bee's sob"s - 08/15/19 03:52 PM

Sevin is your friend when dealing with those nasty things. Dump a mound of it at night on their entrance and they will track it back in to the queen. Wipes em all out within 2 days. Dumped a dirt bike on the entrance of a nest once. That was interesting to get drug off so could vacate the area.

Re: Bee's sob"s - 08/15/19 03:55 PM

That is a lot of bee stings at once. As bad as it's been, it could have been worse. The darned things can kill a feller. Just thinking, as we age things work differently too.

Hope you're feeling better. Never know, maybe a skunk will dig them out before you get a chance to snuff them out.

Found a nest in my yard last year that a critter had partially dug up. Used the hole it had made and dropped in a can of the foaming wasp spray, stepped back a good ways and hit it w the shotgun...very effective!

Open KO's on electrical enclosures is one of my biggest pet peeves. I learned the hard way to check for unused KO's before I pull the cover off of a box that is outside. Especially this time of year.

If you're on a ladder you can't get down fast enough. Trust me.

Ah thanks, Doug, aka Trapstick man, that is pretty much what it looked like except no coonskin hat in the 80 degree weather and carrying a gps receiver which costs 30K.
The gps was nearly left behind in the flight.

Thanks for the thoughts Sharon, every time I go to the hospital they express concern over high blood pressure, my age and general condition.
Next question is... do you have good insurance.....then it is off for a battery of tests not related to what I came in for in the first place.
As long as I can put two feet on the floor within a reasonable amount of time you will not see this old boy at a hospital.
Hey, speaking of Dire Straights, that is one off my favorite bands. Money for Nothin and yer Chicks for Free. Heavy Fuel is a great song too but you don't hear it on the radio much.

Zim listen to Sharon on the stings. That much histamines pumped in you will cause you to have a sever reaction next time. My daughter is a land Geomatics surveyor and that was her first field instructions given her.
How did you flick the stingers out ?
What you have to worry now is that there is a build-up of next years queens and their stingers do not have barbs and you get a 10X dose.
