Progressive lens glasses ?

Well, I must be officially old, I just got my first set of progressive lens glasses. Couldn't see anything close than 2' before, just got to annoying take old glasses on and off. So for you guys that wear them, how long before your eye adjust ? As I look around I feel like I'm walking on a boat, makes me a little lightheaded . I feel like I'm "searching" with my eyes. I just got them so I have only worn then about 8 hrs, then I switched back to old glasses for a while. Any advice ? -Thanks

Your eyes will come around quite quickly as you start to move your head less quickly to get things in focus. The day I got my first pair of those about 25 years ago I got them in the afternoon and my wife cooked spaghetti that night for supper. As I moved my head it looked like a plateful of worms and I almost lost it but you will like them soon. Just don't look at some trees full of leaves blowing in the wind for a day or too!

took about three months for me ,worst part was going down stairs ,you will get use to them

X2 on the stairs. I felt like I would never get used to them and now don't even notice them.

I've been resisting getting them. My eye doc suggested them years ago. I've run out of nose to slide my current glasses down when reading or looking at stuff up close and now just remove them.

I used to wear them before I had lasik surgery. Sitting in a tree stand drove me nuts.

I tried them two or three times, hated them. Never again, I went back to "old school" lined bifocals.

I like mine for fishing. I can see well at a distance and don't have to switch glasses in order to tie on a hook. They are okay for driving too. The thing I dislike them for the most is reading. The area of sharp focus up close is so small that I can't simply move my eyes from the left side of the page to the right. I have to turn my head for each line. I switch to reading glasses for any serious reading.

Never had a problem from day one. Point your nose at what you want to see not your eyes. You turn your head more. Looking to see traffic coming when pulling out is my problem. You have to turn your head so far. Don't be trying to look out the edges of the glasses. JMO

I have been wearing them for about ten years .But I only really needed glasses to read . I now need to wear them all of the time .There is a period of adjustment that can be had by wearing them full time .I am starting to get accustomed to them .I do need to do some more shooting with a scoped rifle before deer season arrives however

I always thought that progressive lenses made everything you looked at racist?

I had them , watch the stairs , I know it has been said but really falls kill almost as many people as cars.


you may find it handy to just have a set of near or far glasses also and a low powered scope for your deer gun..

when I got my glasses I quickly also put a 2-7 power scope on my deer gun that I had always been fine without a scope

I got used to going up/down stairs.

I'm still trying to deal with sights on firearms and bows....

I have a problem with them when backing up a trailer. My neck doesn't turn like the girl in The Exorcist.

I have used progressives for 25+ years, wouldn't have any other kind. The thing to watch out for, in my opinion, is height of lenses. For me, with a 1-1/2" high lens there simply isn't enough space to facilitate reading. 1-3/4" lens height gives room for reading and reduces sudden magnification changes. That 1/4" is only 16.7% more but it makes a big difference.

In law suits about falls attorneys make a point to ask if the person was wearing bi-focal glasses. If they were it's usually case closed! Though widely used, the abrupt change of magnification causes too many falls.

Getting adjusted to your depth and distance perception takes a couple of weeks and you should be good. I kept miss judgeing curbs and steps at first. Like being drunk but your not.

I lost one eye to macula degeneration. Without binocular vision judging distances is difficult, particularly up close.

I've had them for about 6 months and can't stand them . I got them so I could read a map in low light , see the dashboard and then see down the road clearly . Also to be able to see specks of blood at my feet while following a blood trail and then being able to see clearly at a distance . Bifocals weren't cutting it . The doctor recommended these . These things take a lot of getting used too (i'm still not and I wear them every day/all day ). They make me loose my depth perception while walking and are mildly disorienting while walking in the woods . Its like you loose the sense of where you are / direction while you stumble around like a doofus because your depth perception is off . Also to see something clearly at any given distance you have to find the correct "spot" on the lens to look through . You become distracted trying to find the correct spot . Not good while driving especially at night .

For those having longer term adjustment issues you can change on the lens were the progression starts. You can create a larger or smaller window if you will that may allow you to not be moving your head as much and causing more adaptation issues than need be. I have had mine for about 25 years or so. I have moved the progression window line twice in that time.

So after a day and a half of wearing them, I noticed my peripheral vision is blurred and it feels like I'm in a fish bowl. I sure hope things get better after a week or so.

This is what I hated most. At the time I tried them I drove a truck, I realized I couldn't glance in the left outside mirror by moving my eyes, I had to turn my whole head. I felt like a barn owl on barn loft beam turning my head so much.
