By itself it's worthless imo. Give it a light squeeze of a good predator bait solution and it's great

Really worthless by itself? It was posted on here. If that for sure. I not buying it as not mix nothing with it, I am order supplies from 1 vendor this fall, because shipping an not buy some expensive small quanity bait he carry's of different lure bait dealers they have, I use up lots dp bait an was thinking about using on pockets above the water pocket in rainy weather when creeks rise way up as chance at coon

Re: Dp bait question - 08/21/19 09:29 PM

It doesn't have much in the way of odor. That's why I add bait solution. I want something that can get it's attention. They will gorge themselves on an open bag of it if they find one.

Cat food and sardines in oil...

Just don't store it in a blue bucket, that will create a whole other set of problems....

Re: Dp bait question - 08/23/19 12:40 AM

Norby's farm fleet, tractor supply, maybe Thiesens. Go to any mill and you can buy a 50 pound bag of cracked corn for under $6.

Re: Dp bait question - 08/23/19 01:53 AM

There is a difference in Fish Pellets. Look at the fish meal content. The ones with more fish meal smell more from my limited experience...but adding smells/flavors is a good idea anyhow.

http://www.jimfreyfishhatchery.com/

This hatchery is in west union he might be able to help you find low cost feed if he doesn’t have any, I have wanted to get up there and talk to them but I’ve just never taken the time.

Re: Dp bait question - 08/30/19 11:13 PM

The float fish bait in large quantities an like $18, would cheap cat food mixed with few small marshmellows an dry jello mix be as effective ? Wouldn't float fish pellets be just as attractive to cats as cat food? Would dry jello mix , make unattractive to cats ? Would dry corn be good mix in ?

Re: Dp bait question - 08/30/19 11:20 PM

Remember a raccoon will eat out of the trash. Stick it in front of his nose and he’ll eat it. Putting it in front of him is more important than nit picking what is in the pipe. Any of that stuff works fine all mixed together.

I've heard that if you find a Mexican with a bulge in his pocket it's probably DP coon bait he's got stashed away. I've heard they may give it to you at a great price.

Best bait this side of the Rio Grande.

Re: Dp bait question - 08/30/19 11:48 PM

Would the small marshmellows make it to sticky mess ? Would it be better to mix, right before season an not 2 months ahead time ?

Re: Dp bait question - 08/30/19 11:52 PM

I only use Copper River smoked salmon that has been marinating in expensive French Cognac for at least 24 hours

I had it before. But to costly for 30 plus dp traps

Re: Dp bait question - 08/31/19 01:37 AM

a 50lb bag of floating catfish food from tractor supply is about 15.00. I spray mine with cheap liquid smoke from dollar general. i recycle plastic water bottles to carry it in. unscrew the lid, shake some into the dp trap and go.takes me about 3 years to use it up.

Re: Dp bait question - 08/31/19 04:17 PM

Sorry I post this at break time at work an hard do when in hurry on phone, dp trapping is kinda new to me as never did much except little until last cpl years, I have always bought bait with good results, but end up use marshmellows when out, I bought gallon of ADC trail mix last season with cheery base with exellent results but used up fairly fast, so I bought 12 pounds of cheap cat food with 3 bags small marshmellows an 4 different flavor dry jello mix Walmart last nite, thinking about get some shell corn or other ingredient to add, don't like using cat food but float fish pellets are close same thing, is different flavors of jello mix ok? One flavor of mix drown other out ? What else could add other than corn ? For dry additive ? So far about $15 at least wrap up in it an about same cost as trail mix,

Would body grips maybe make this easier?

Wrapped around the axle to attract raccoons? We all do things different but I would assume we're all shooting towards the same goal/results and they will vary greatly depending on population etc. You trapping raccoon who've had a few coon trapping lessons at one of the trapper colleges that now surf the trapping forums and working towards their PhD in bait schemes? Run a trail cam all year and watch how they react to whatever you put out especially during the time you are targeting them and you will save lots of $. This will allow you to see the draw, reactions etc. You will also notice that a good bait won't get recognition if the animal you target isn't there. Takes little to no time to put a cam out and bait an area, especially if someone is concerned about what to add or not and come up with some magical recipe that is supposed to get coon walking sideways to your sets. Plenty of pages on the forums to get you to spend unnecessary money on recipes.

How much ordor does it give out ?

You will also learn very quickly that on many occasions odor is overrated. Just because something has a strong odor doesn't mean it will whack & stack'em. Think about scent control and the crazy things lots of people do to try and "eliminate or minimize" their scent in the field. You telling me with what you have already purchased and being placed out in the open, you need to worry about odor? lol Crazy mane!

Cheap and easy to make. Dump into gallon ziplock bag add 3-4 tblsp of vanilla shake and let it absorb. Put it on the trigger. Remove coon next morning
Posted By: coonman220

Re: Dp bait question - 08/31/19 08:33 PM

I never try vanilla, I do prefer a dry bait, small marshmellos, mix with dry bait are better than big sticky marshmellows in sun
Posted By: jbyrd63

Re: Dp bait question - 08/31/19 09:52 PM

Not sticky if you prepare them the way I do. Let them soak everything up and leave bag open if they are sticky.

Re: Dp bait question - 08/31/19 09:57 PM

Got about 2 38 cents in that . Cut the marshmallows in half let them lay on table over night and dry out....then mix concocktion. bait about 40 traps for 2,38 cents. Hard to find anything cheaper.......

Re: Dp bait question - 08/31/19 10:02 PM

Much easier and cleaner process when you can dip a stick in the jar and smear it on the object, put the cap back on then throw it back into the "trapping bag" and go. With the right agents, the bait will stay "moist" and not dry out and become "stuck" or interfere with moving parts of a trap.

COONMAN220 I did not read all 3 pages but for what its worth I purchased 1 quart of Wrights hickory smoke (liquid) for 12 bucks shipped of of ebay (came from Texas) a couple drops in a container(size may vary) of fish meal dogfood corn etc whatever is edible for coon will smoke it up and i'll have plenty for burgers steaks and everythingelse for quite a while as posted if your targeting coon heading for a major feeding site any set has to be right under their nose
Posted By: coonman220

Re: Dp bait question - 09/01/19 06:15 PM

I have never used liquid smoke, I wonder how work with small marshmellows an cheap Kat food with dry different flavor jello mix? Maybe wrong kind mix? Also bought some styrofoam cups, I used last season on 1st nite in heavy rain storm, not much caught an was rain hard when check an nearly or flooded, just left them an plan reset rebait 2nd day an lots catches 2nd day

Re: Dp bait question - 09/01/19 06:30 PM

I took the pork and chicken fat drippings from my pellet smoker bucket Mix with dry dog food. Its really Smokey caught coon coyote, and red and grey fox talk about digging.
Posted By: jeff karsten

Re: Dp bait question - 09/01/19 06:36 PM

Really doubt there is a wrong concoction as long as its edible to coon
Posted By: Calvin

Re: Dp bait question - 09/01/19 07:18 PM

One thing I learned as a kid by raising a few coon is their taste buds are as different as humans. What one likes, doesn't mean the next one will touch it. Use ONE bait and you're shooting yourself in the foot. Have a few on hand come season.

Liquid smoke is great stuff...but potent, and can easily overpower every other smell you have in your bait. Kind of like Skunk essence in a way. Great stuff, but easy does if you want them to smell anything else. If using liquid smoke alone, add glycerin to keep it from evaporating as quickly (it's water based).

As Asa once said, Skunk is the number 1 attractant for most every animal. I agree. People overlook skunk for coon....but what always shows up in our skunky coyote sets?
Posted By: coonman220

Re: Dp bait question - 09/01/19 07:24 PM

Ya glycerin expensive. I see liquid smoke is like $10 gallon, was thinking of it but don't want have dogs at pocket sets in water. At it, probly wont work out jello powder. Maybe I just find some shell corn an add to cheap Kat food with small marshmellows mix in an dry jello powder, hopefully enough order from jello powder to interest them on there trail

Re: Dp bait question - 09/01/19 09:11 PM

If you are trapping their trail, why not set a foothold right in the trail and catch them? Not hoping they like your bait concoction. Might have to deal with a skunk or possum once in a while. You make coon trapping way too difficult.
Posted By: coonman220

Re: Dp bait question - 09/01/19 10:22 PM

I don't trail set with footholds. Connibears I do, dp set is quick, dog proof, can sometimes set closer bldgs. Set where no cover from grass or brush that would set connibear in. Set dp in short grass. Bare ground or under bridges on bank where lot easier to set dp than pocket in water
Posted By: bankrunner

Re: Dp bait question - 09/02/19 02:15 AM

And if they are not interested, they keep walking by your dog proofs. Hard to walk their trail with a trap planted in their way. If there is a trail in short grass I will set it all day long. You can set foothold just as close as a dogproof.
Posted By: coonman220

Re: Dp bait question - 09/02/19 04:42 PM

To time consuming for me to set lots footholds in trails in road ditch an to many nontargets
