Thats my guess shareholders would go nuts and Im guessing most companies would go broke short term. This country is not that nationalistic.

Re: Mandate or request - 08/24/19 02:45 PM

Huge tariffs could change that.
I suggested many years ago that it was not a good idea to send boat loads of money to China as they would use our money to buy themselves a blue water navy.
They now have 2 aircraft carriers where they had none before. We bought them. Nice of us.

China has sent a lot of there money here to buy our treasury bonds. They have financed our economy as well as we have helped theirs.

There are billions of other people who would happily sell us cheap crap, if we stop doing business with China, including people in India, Pakistan, the rest of Asia, Mexico, South America and Africa. We don't need Chinese buyers for American manufactured goods. The people in those other countries, who started producing cheap goods for us, would then have the Chinese's former income and would spend it on our stuff.

American companies, that are located in China, will just relocate to another country with cheap labor, who will ecstatically welcome them.

In the case of food commodities, like corn, wheat and soybeans, China would continue to have to buy from us or have their people starve, until they rise up and overthrow the Chinese government.

After a short adjustment period, things will be the same for us. The only long term losers will be Chinese.

Thistype of stuf from a president should concern BOTH parties and ALL Americans:

Trump had previously cited the 1977 act, which gives the president the power to regulate commerce during exceptional international crises, earlier Friday before departing for the Group of Seven summit in France.

In a string of tweets Friday morning, the president said he was ordering U.S. companies to “immediately start looking for an alternative to China,” beginning with making their products in the United States.

“The vast amounts of money made and stolen by China from the United States, year after year, for decades, will and must STOP. Our great American companies are hereby ordered to immediately start looking for an alternative to China, including bringing your companies HOME and making your products in the USA,” Trump tweeted.

Don’t they deserve the right to be able to defend their country like the U.S deserves to defend theirs?

Prior presidents didn't put America first as Trump does.

Trade between countries is a can be a good thing. It seems we are taking a position that one country must lose. Thinking of everything as either beating a country or losing to it makes us forget that things can be made to work for the benefit of both.

Re: Mandate or request - 08/24/19 07:02 PM

One side must lose.

That's been China's stance.

Answer this..........

If China can make goods soooo much cheaper than we can, why do they need to add even more to the cost of our products we send over? shocked

If you watched or read anything President Donald Trump truly said, instead of just edited, taken out of context blurbs, you should not think that. President Donald Trump is very much for balanced trade with other countries. The problem is that other past, American administrations have made very poor deals for America because of their incompetence or to support their personal enrichment.

America first does not mean that we ignore the interests of our trade partners. President Donald Trump has on numerous occasions said that other governments should put their people first too. Only when 2 trade partners both look out for the best interest of their people, can a fair trade deal be made.

Defend, yes.
Move out into the pacific laying claim to every island and sandbar or even building islands to claim, NO.

You forget they make terrible neighbors threatening Taiwan, they hate Japan, have forced down American military aircraft, conquered and subjegated Tibet, put pressure on Nepal and ain't to friendly with the Russians.

Re: Mandate or request - 08/25/19 09:58 PM

gryhkl What you fail to mention is that China has been hosing us for years. I would guess that China has been paying off the American Government to allow it to happen. How do you think they all become rich? They get plenty of money from within our boarders, you don't think it comes from outside too? That's where the big money is.

Re: Mandate or request - 08/26/19 02:15 PM

How is it that the past president (Obummer) could afford a 14.8 million dollar home on Martha's Vineyard?

And own a large home in Washington D.C.? He didn't have hardly a dime when he was a Senator. And shortly afterwards he got a million dollar home!

Plenty of deals were dealt when the N.A. F.T.A. deal went down.

I look for them to dump a bunch of those treasuries bonds ,and anything else they can do to throw our markets into termoil right before the election .
They will hold out until after election to settle on a trade deal and they will do everything they can to get rid of trump. You wont be able to get close to anything digital without it screaming "vote trump out." They only thought the russians were meddlesome. We havnt seen anything yet .

Why would you think that would damage the US ? It would only harm the Chinese. I'm sure the media would make a big deal about it but it would really be a non-event for us.

I agree with you White its going to be ugly! What upsets me more than anything is I know the politicians and a few that are close to the upper crust are trading on the volatility.

Re: Mandate or request - 08/26/19 06:52 PM

Yep. Volatility is great as long as you can afford to take advantage of it

Re: Mandate or request - 08/26/19 06:58 PM

We will not be pulling out.
We have 9 or 10 plants there.
Leggett & Platt is trying to deal with the increased tariff, but of course, customers don't want to "help" with it much.
Luckily we have bout 80% of the chair part industry

Re: Mandate or request - 08/26/19 10:37 PM

While we want to play a game of "chicken" with China, China is investing huge dollars in Africa, knowing that is where new markets will be and also many immigrants they will need in their work force in a few years. China is also investing heavily along with Russia in Arctic travel vehicles etc. etc. Maybe we should get on board with the idea that the global economies and markets are shifting instead of playing in a sand box that uses up our resources sparring instead of developing more businesses and models that will fit the future.
