Pulling to left while braking

Pulling to left while braking - 08/25/19 12:22 AM

New used truck I just purchased
Air brakes
Chevy T7500
Pulling to left every time I brake
Loud noise on left side when braking hard

Possible causes?

I've never messed with air brakes. Just looking for some good pointers before I dive in.

Grease seal? Out of adjustment? Crystalized pad? Etc...

Because this truck is essentially unknown to me. I'm thinking I'm just gonna do a full job? New everything?

No visible leakage from outside

Break shoes wore out the other side not doing it's part?

Why the loud slapping noise on left when breaking hard then?

Also,

There is some squealing and slight pulsation of pedal. But I think those could be different issue all together?

Me lacking in expirence with air brakes wants to say left side needs adjusted? Because it pulls to left all the time and engages hard when breaking hard on the left side.

Dunno!

I think it's just all gonna get replaced!

Or maybe right is out of adjustment making left to compensate?

all I know about air brakes is semis.

if I adjust my brakes I adjust them all. on a big truck more brake on one side could be an equalizer valve needs replaced.

crawl under there and have a look. look for broke/cracked shoes or wore out shoes. listen for air leaks. look for a broken slack adjuster. have somebody step on the brake pedal and hold it. listen for air leaks and watch the pressure gauge. gauge should hold steady. look and make sure slack adjusters are moving when the pedal is depressed. last check the abs light and make sure the bulb wasn't removed to hide a problem

If adjusted wrong the shoes can glaze over. Can clean them sometimes with mineral spirits. Could have a cracked drum on the right making the left do all the braking. I am assuming this is on a big truck as never heard of air brakes on a private size vehicle.

It's a T7500 with 13 yd packer body. Truck weight is 21000 empty

Will do

Brother in law is a truck driver/tech. Says it sounds like a slack adjuster?

I still think I'm gonna replace everything in the front just so I know what I have?

He will come out tmrw afternoon after church and take a look.

Re: Pulling to left while braking - 08/25/19 02:12 AM

left side being adjusted and the right side needing adjustment. Or like said previously brake valve might need to be replaced. Could even be the brake cam bushing have excessive wear causing them to stick a little when applied. (did brake work on semi's years ago.)

If it's got play and slap it's a wore out or loose issue.

Sound like a strip out slack adjuster, What year is the truck? old slack adjuster can do that.. Adjust the brakes then have someone hit the brakes if the slack adjuster makes a clattering sound then it's bad and won't stay adjusted.

pulling left while braking--sounds like a demoncrat. grin

Re: Pulling to left while braking - 08/25/19 01:20 PM

it could be a leaking wheel seal and oil on the brake pad

Re: Pulling to left while braking - 08/25/19 08:01 PM

Went through and adjusted/greased everything

Now all pulling to left is fixed. But it will pull right now when I brake hard.

Re: Pulling to left while braking - 08/25/19 08:54 PM

did you check that abs light?
Posted By: danny clifton

Re: Pulling to left while braking - 08/25/19 09:54 PM

Its real common to pull the bulb out or unplug it so a d.o.t. inspector wont see the anti brake skid is faulty. Usually its just a sensor adjustment. That ABS system can cause all sorts of braking problems

No

Lol, forgot.

If problem continues from side to side every time I adjust. What could be causing it? Brake valve?

Hmm?

I'll adjust again tmrw. If problem continues? Then I will have to find someone in that pay grade to check out those sensors.

Re: Pulling to left while braking - 08/25/19 11:40 PM

only thing I can think of since it switched sides is the abs system

Re: Pulling to left while braking - 08/25/19 11:48 PM

just check the light first. if its unplugged you know there is a abs problem. plug it in I bet that warning light comes on
Posted By: brianmall

Re: Pulling to left while braking - 08/26/19 12:27 AM

I'll check it
Posted By: brianmall

Re: Pulling to left while braking - 08/26/19 09:50 PM

ABS light came on when I started truck with all the other warning lights. So I assume there is no issue there?

Also, all pulling quit 1\2 hour into route. Slight pull to the right if I slam on breaks as I would in an emergency.

So I think I'm good?

Re: Pulling to left while braking - 08/26/19 10:11 PM

If it pulls to the left and ,makes a lot of noise ...... if it also blows smoke up your stern end ..... It was built by a Democrat

Re: Pulling to left while braking - 08/26/19 10:12 PM

By the way, that is why I fix boats and not trucks as I know nothing about them anymore.

Re: Pulling to left while braking - 09/02/19 08:32 PM

So

Now the ABS light is comming on. About an hour or so into route it comes on and stays on until I shut truck down. No physical indications as to why.

What say you?
