I'm hoping to shoot an elk in the future. I use a 7mm mag and am wondering about bullet selection. I'm thinking about 160 nosler partitions. Any recommendations? Thanks.
The 7mm mag is certainly adequate for elk, but elk are a very tough animal, make sure you use a bullet that will hold together well. The Barnes TSX like already mentioned is a good one. There are a lot of bullets on the market now a whole lot better than the old Remington Core-Lokt.
I've always done rather well with Hornady bullets no matter if it's shooting deer, antelope elk or buffalo . It's all in what your rifle likes and that's your going to be confident in shooting.
I have had issues getting partitions to shoot. The accuracy just was not there for me with the Partitions and I have tried them from 22 through 32 caliber in various rifles. I have shot an elk and two caribou with a 200 gn Accubond out of my 8mm Mag the bullet performed well. I have been working with the Barnes TTSX and I really like the way it shoots and the weight retention is phenomenal. I wanted to use the Barnes Tsx a few years ago on Buffalo, but had not settled on a load at the time.
Some guns will shoot Partitions pretty well. Years ago I was told that it pays to measure them if you want to use for accuracy and see the difference. Find the size that shoots well and sort through them. the 225 gr .35 caliber one shoots well in my .35 Whelen. I also have a .243 Ackley Improved with a Hart barrel that handles them well. Both without sorting. With that said, there are many good choices today that were not available 20+ years ago.

me too and Sierra Pro-hunters too, either 175's or 160's.
whichever is MOST ACCURATE out of your rifle.
I tried all those expensive bullets over a 30 yr period, only to find out the animals couldn't tell the difference, so went back to the cheaper bullets.
There's not a modern bullet out there for the 7 mag that won't kill every elk you shoot with it. Shoot 'em where they are supposed to be shot and it's game over.

X2 better than the Corelokt and better than the Sierra ( core throwers)
I went to the Hornady 175 on moose. A HUGE improvement over the Sierra 168 !

Nosler Partitions are about as good of Elk bullet as there is.
I'm a big fan of Barnes and Nosler accubonds. Both seem to be consistent. The partition was probably the best bullet design ever made but there are better choices out there for consistent accuracy. My only recommendation is stay away from the thin skinned bullets. They seem to be pretty popular but to me not a good choice for elk. They are accurate but terminal performance is the name of the game with me.

I agree with everything you've said including the Core-Lokt. I have killed a number of elk over the past 22 years using a 30-06 and a 300 WSM. I used Barnes bullets the X and the TSX. In the 06 I used 150 grain. For the 300 I used 165 grain. Both rifles shot the Barnes bullets very well. In almost every case, the bullet exited the animal. I never lost a single animal.
