No idea on them Pat, there was an article on it last month or so in the NRA magazine.
(I am a life member in that domestic terrorist operation)
I have a nasty case of covet for a 35 Whelen and now that you mention it I need a new rifle also.

been reading about them . though about one I saw nice price on an upper the other day.

if your looking at a bolt gun, 308 , 30-06, 358 win , 35 Wheelen all give more range and greater power.

but if your in the need of a niche cartridge to give greater energy for relatively short range game hunting Sub 200 yards that fits an AR15 platform or to use in a state with a strait wall cartridge law for deer hunting with an overall length restriction , it is a jackpot.

I need another rifle also but have been standardizing cases , I felt like I was loading too many different things

I know a bunch of people have asked about if it will be made into a lever gun, problem is very few lever actions can take 55Kpsi.

any lever gun that it would be built in would have to probably have a rotary locking bolt it wouldn't be that hard but it wouldn't be very traditional.

Might be legal in the "straight wall" states... I know the .450 Bushmaster just became legal in DE.

Why not jump on the 6.5 Transgender bandwagon?

.350 Legend is also allowed in DE. It fits in the case length guidelines.

I've heard a lot of smaller shooters like the cartridge due to the reduced felt recoil.

I run a 357 maximum in rifle configuration to meet straight wall requirements. The legend is pretty much similar.

350 legend because it is a 55Kpsi round makes gains over the 357 maximum a 40Kpsi case

sort of a 357max +P+ rimless so that it feeds better from box mags.

cartridge development has taken 3 maybe 4 paths in the last decade or two

1 long range performance , hotter faster , flatter.

2 long range performance , hotter faster flatter , but still fits in a standard short action.

3 what can we cram in a AR mag hotter faster flatter

4. what can we fit in an AR mag and make fit strait wall states requirements.

I'm not a big fan of the AR, I admit I have considered it lately 350 legend or .224 valkyrie.

I've never shot the .308 or 30-06 much, they get left at home most of the time.

I stumbled on the 350 legend last week while gun shopping for my wife. Savage has the new style axis 2 in 350. I almost ordered it, but opted for .243 since I have ammo for it. I didn't realize how much I liked the new axis till last night when I was putting a scoop on it. I ordered it in the compact model (short stock and barrel). I put a lighted reticle 2-7×32 scope on it.. it has me thinking that I need that same set up in 350.

Mossberg has just released the 350 legend in their Patriot synthetic line and possibly the synthetic compact , hoping it makes the predator line next year.

the Patriot predator has a threaded muzzle and rail for mounting optic my next one will be in 308 . but could see a 16 inch barrel version in 350 as something a lot of people would like.

I have another 308 with threaded muzzle and run a muzzle brake on it , the brake really reduces the recoil.

I prefer the Mossberg to the axis , I like other Savage models but the Axis didn't do anything for me.

Re: 350 legend - 09/11/19 03:00 PM

18 inch barrel on the savage. I had a couple of the older axis rifles and wasn't that impressed with them, the new model is really nice.

Wonder how the .350 stacks up with the .450 in performance on game and as far as ballistics...

Re: 350 legend - 09/11/19 03:56 PM

if i was in the market for a straight walled rifle at the moment, i'd get the legend. and i'd pick that over its closest 35 caliber rival the maximum primarily because you wont run into the hassles that you have with the maximum being nearly extinct and as such almost a wild cat.

the legend provides factory guns so that you don't have to buy a custom gun or barrel. there's factory ammo for the guy that doesnt reload and it can be run on AR platform if that is something you want. probably the biggest thing that excites me about the legend is that we will get some new bullets that are specific to the round. up to to this point, if you were running a straight walled 35 caliber you generally had to pick from bulky pistol bullets some of which arent exactly designed to handle rifle velocities or at the other extreme hard to expand rifle bullets or get custom bullets.

if you don't reload and have to go with factory ammo, on paper the maximum can beat the current anemic factory loads for the legend as its almost a necessity to reload the maximum and many run the maximum over its pistol max psi. BUT the legend with factory fodder will provide more than enough for the short range it was intended. and if you reload, the legend is going to give .1" more case capacity than the max so it should give another 75-200 fps over what most typically push the 180 grainers using solid reloading data and without the fears of trying to interpret pressure signs.

and i'd also pick the legend over the 450 bushmaster which i've also got on AR platform. its a good gun but i'd probably like it better if i was bear or hog hunting with it. i much prefer my maximum for deer hunting. i really see no practical difference on critters between the two guns at least out to 225 yard range. i have shot critters with 450 at longer ranges but not the 357 so can't make comparison between the two out farther.

35 caliber on deer sized critters is a pretty deadly option keeping in mind this is no bottle neck centerfire. don't think you'd be disappointed if you get one

Re: 350 legend - 09/11/19 04:11 PM

I don;t think an animal would know the difference inside 100 yards between the 2 , but the shooter should feel the difference between launching 300 grains at 1800 fps vs 170gr at 2200 fps , actual terminal energy isn't that different inside 150 yards the trajectory isn't that much of a difference either , but the recoil is.
the 350 also uses your original BCG if you run it in an AR so it is like 300 blackout , just a barrel change not barrel , Bolt and mag.

Re: 350 legend - 09/11/19 07:22 PM

just my opinion--but I consider the 450 as basically way more than you really need for killing critters like deer. and yep it does recoil. not same as slug gun but enough that it pushes me off target even in AR.

my 357 maximum has killed a bunch of critters but the vast majority were taken by kids primarily in the youth hunt. it has minimal recoil even when pushing it up towards its limit.

and it only takes a second to twist the turret and send bullet to within inch or so of where you want out to 225-250 yards or if you mess with it enough you can go to point blank and then add a little increase in elevation.

only had one event that required tracking. was long 500 yards search from shot at deer about 30 yards away and directly facing young hunter that grazed down the entire side of rib cage. just happened to get lucky and disintegrate ribs into shards that punctured lungs. other than that i've seen no real difference between 450 and 357

So I have an AR15 in 5.56, exactly what do I need to buy to change it to .350 Legend? Barrel and Magazine, but what else I have a Linear Muzzle Brake on it now, will it need changed as well?

Re: 350 legend - 09/11/19 09:04 PM

easiest option https://www.bearcreekarsenal.com/bc...e-length-gas-system-1-16-twist-w-15-mlok

a complete upper

the only thing different between an 5.56 upper is that the barrel is chambered 350 legend and the muzzle thread will be 5/8-24 and not 1/2-28 thread

and yes a magazine swap , but the 350 legend uses the exact same head as the 223 so the bolt can remain the same.

6.5 gendel , 224 valkarie , 450 bush master all also required a different bolt

So Winchester re-invented the 110 year old .351 Winchester cartridge. All the hype about "new" cartridge. Yawn...........

---- but I'm not wanting to spend the cost of a new rifle. I may as well buy another gun. (The one you linked is not available and the only complete uppers I have found are in the $400+ range.) A barrel and mag is like $120.00

https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1021111763 305 free shipping

the down side of removing your barrel from the 5.56/223 is if your planning to go back and forth. time and re sight in has a cost also.

a 60 dollar upper , 85 dollar barrel 25 dollars for a gas block and gas tube , 60 dollar hand guard with barrel nut

but if you had a donor upper that had a shot out 223 barrel you or if they didn't like they way it was shooting and you could get it cheap , yes just a barrel and mag.

but I don't think it is that realistic to swap barrels back and forth for each hunting season but I suppose you could

Re: 350 legend - 09/12/19 03:36 AM

I feel bad for instigating gun purchases.

I convinced myself last night I didn't need another gun. So, today I started pedaling stuff on craigslist and Facebook to fund a gun I don't need. I figure if I buy it with money I didn't have I really didn't spend anything on it. A couple days and I should have a new rifle.

I was on vacation today , mostly running errands , fixing things around the house and such but I got to hit one of the gun shops and spend some quality alone time at the range all by my self.

at the LGS they had the RUger 350 Legend ,this isn't the tore I went to but to give you a picture to look at.

https://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/415007157/ruger+american+ranch+rifle+350+legend+1638%22+tb+5%2B1+26981

local price was 450

16.38 inch barrel , threaded muzzle , uses AR mags , easy to shoulder

exactly what I was envisioning a light handy little 350 bolt gun would be

Re: 350 legend - 03/18/20 04:29 AM

your not kidding I , went to the local gun store tonight they hadn't been open 30 minutes I bet he had sold 4 guns already and piles of ammo.

I went planning to get a pound of powder and maybe a box of bullets.

well I left with a bit more than that.

a few weeks ago you couldn't have stuffed another pistol in that pistol case today there was a lot of room

I had been looking at reloading supplies last week thinking I could use some of this and some of that , looked Sunday night everything I had been looking at was now on back-order

now just everything is on back-order

local shop said they were open through Saturday then closed , not sure he will have anything left in the store come Saturday
