Which firearm to use: Ruger AR 556 or 243

Which firearm to use: Ruger AR 556 or 243 - 09/11/19 02:18 PM

I recently purchased a Ruger AR 556 that shoots 223’s. I have a lever action Savage 243 with a variable 3x9 scope. I am debating which firearm to use for coyote calling. Most shots will be in high desert country. I realize I can get shots off quicker with the Ruger but will distance be sacrificed. Anybody use both a 243 and a semi automatic rifle for varmint hunting. Thoughts please on pros and cons.

Sell the AR and get you a good bolt gun.

Use the AR. Mine shoots 3/8 groups all day long. It will serve you well
Arrest follow up and cheaper ammo. Lighter than bigger rifle.
243 big bullets make bigger holes but can shoot longer shots with more power
Most people do well at 300 yards and less. It takes practice to hit further shots and the further out they are the more practice you need

Is it mostly windy? If so i'd look closer at the 243

There is not a lot of difference in using those calibers for calling ,just a little more reach from 243 on longer shots ,with the right bullet you wont be able to tell what shot what!

Here in Indiana I'd go with the .243 because it's a cooler rifle and the bigger bullet will put the smackdown on the big, hairy eastern dogs. But for the big-dollar, fluffy little coyotes you have in Idaho I think I'd opt for a light bullet in the .223.
