Marten trapping banned in part of oregon - 09/16/19 09:26 PM

Only in certain areas in the coast range. Marten in the Cascades and Blue Mountains can still be trapped. At least for awhile longer.

The unsettling part of the article is that one of the biggest threats to that population is the traffic along I-5. So let’s ban motor traffic too.........

You can tell a lot by how an article is worded .

To sway, or influence its readers.

Sentiments like " cuddly appearance....so -called fur takers .....potential to wipe out the remaining coastal population ....." as if trappers don't know how nor care about taking good care of their habitat ....

At least the biologist interviewed gave truth to the skill of trapper's knowledge and value to educate, on the real status of the environment in question, in his defense of trapping.

Concerning the rarity of the species discussed, along with the two other subspecies mentioned, Jack's input on this would be what I would bank on in any serious solid form.

Yezzum, Nancy, why not just close the whole area to traffic, logging and pot growing ? Maybe one or more of those would encroach upon the interests of the " conservation groups "....

Thank you, Nancy, for the info.

Wayne trapped in the Cascades. Not the Coastal range. But he still wouldn’t like this. His opinion would probably earn him a Tman vacation!! LOL

The first Marten I ever saw was in Oregon in the mid 80s.

The biggest cause of mortality is traffic on the coast highway not I- 5 . Trappers haven't harvested one on the coast since 2014. They never did prove that it's a sub species. But the commissioners didn't listen to the science or the recommendations from odfw.

To be clear on which so-called "conservation groups" were responsible for bringing this decision to the fore:

Cascadia Wildlands
Center for Biological Diversity
Defenders of Wildlife
Environmental Protection Information Center
Klamath-Siskiyou Wildlands Center
Oregon Wild

The Center for Biological Diversity has been involved in nearly every legal, administrative and legislation action taken against trapping over the past several years. If there's been a battle that trappers have lost (or even won) you can bet the CBD had a hand in the fight at some juncture. The CBD was the principal player behind the California trapping ban, and they are enemy #1 to trappers and hunters everywhere by a long shot. PETA and HSUS can't hold a candle to the CBD in this regard. mad mad mad

The above agencies are know it All's that have no understanding of nothing. Bio diversity at its finest.

I believe that they should stop our "legal pot production" until a study can be done on the effects of pesticides on them. I have relatives in that area, and have worked with a corp of engineers guy(former now) on the bird project down there. they were talking about eliminating trapping on the dunes back then (15 years ago) They had a hard time accepting that the seagulls and the foxes were the birds biggest problem back then. They obviously found another avenue. Noone that i know of is targeting martins down there. That does not mean that noone is but i have a hard time believing any trappers are actively pursuing them.

The outcome of this study was predetermined by the protectionist culture embedded into the right areas of modern wildlife biology.

These coastal marten have always been present and are still present today, that speaks volumes more about the true population than any of these bias studies.

The highway mortality cannot be quantified because nobody sees the total count of every roadkill marten or any other small specie of mammal for that matter due to scavengers that eat every last carcass killed on that highway. At first light the vast majority of everything small killed throughout the night is plucked off the road by scavenging birds.

Oregon trappers really took it in the shorts on this one, this is an example of why reporting certain catches of wildlife is just not in our best interest in modern times, in my opinion.

Wow, that is really too bad. A shame to see Oregon make these sort of decisions. Like was mentioned having Kate Brown in office does not help
