I have a rifle that these shoot well in. Anyone have any experience with there effectiveness on deer?

These are hornady match ammo.

A HP off hand would not be my 1st choice but it depends on the makeup of the bullet and how soft it might be, is it recommended for larger game?

Can't speak to those, but Federal Fusion 62 grain is a potent pill for deer in .223 caliber.

If it is labeled match ammo then it will not expand like a hunting bullet. It may disintegrate or deform and be mildly effective but will not mushroom reliably, or may not expand at all. Just because it is a hollow point design dont let that fool you into thinking its an expanding hollow point. Sierra 168gr hpbt (Like found in federal gold medal match ammo) for instance is a strictly match bullet and not a hunting bullet, The make the tip hollow to bring the center of mass rearward to make a more stable bullet flight.
Hornady has new ELD bullet design and there are 2 different kinds ELD-M (match) and ELD-X (eXpanding for hunting). But they look the same on the outside.

If this is the bullet you have you will see right in the description it says hornady does not recommend this bullet for hunting. For the reasons i have described above.

62gr partitions or 60-70gr tsx is what I use. I prefer the 70gr tsx myself

The bullets that have been recommended already are great choices for deer. The federal fusion stuff has rave reviews from all hunters i know that use them. I prefer the tipped triple shock bullets that danny recommended but basically the same thing. I loaded some 64gr nosler bonded protected point bullets to try out, they shoot well but after looking for more of them i saw they were discontinued? I havent tried them hunting yet and dont know if i can get more. There are plenty of options for deer hunting with a 223 but be sure to stay away from varmint or match/target bullets. Midway usually has a good description of what it is you are looking at.

I would recommend a larger caliber rifle

70 grain Speer spire point do well or the 62 grain TSX I have not tried any others in the 223 thus far and the Grendel has taken over that job anyway.

I was not aware that match grade bullets were not recommended for hunting. I am going to try the 62 fusions to see how, they shoot. Anyone have any experience with there from a 1/9 barrel ? Any other suggestions for factory ammo for a 1/9 barrel?.

Remington Hog Hammer uses the 62 grain TSX in that factory load. They should do well for you.

I shoot a 55 grain Norma Oryx bullet out of my 220 Swift on our small deer here with very good results. You should certainly be able to find a big game bullet for a 223.

Good luck.

I see they make Winchester deer season ammo for .223. I highly recommend trying that. We've been shooting that for the last couple years in several guns, and it works great. I haven't seen a deer go more than 30 feet. It dumps all its energy into the deer. I haven't seen much for blood trails to follow, but haven't needed them either. Now that I think about it, there isn't much chance for blood flow with no vitals left.

You should have received your answer by now that no one has experience with hollow points on deer as they are not that stupid to shoot large game with a bullet designed to fragment and blow up.
Put it this way. You are a deer and someone decides to use a bullet that happens to deflect, hits a leg bone, or you are wet that morning from dew and it blows up on your hair. You can't go to an emergency ward, but run off and suffer. If you are going to go that light, choose from the bullets suggested above, as you have no room to spare on even the light deer you have in your state. You need penetration, transfer of energy, expansion and a bullet holding together in case something bad happens as it always does.

My experience was with a 243, 100 grain Winchester PSP. I read the gun magazine assurances of writers bankrolled by Winchester and in return my first buck had a bullet blow up on his shoulder, and I had to chase the deer a mile, before a second bullet blew up on his shoulder, and then I finished him. That taught me a lesson I never forgot.
My best friend in that era has a 222 Remington. At 12 years old, he shot the biggest buck of his life with a 50 grain Core Lock. He was sick about it, as he never saw that deer again.
We have heavier deer in the midwest, but for the simple reason of being humane, not having to spend days looking for a deer, anti hunters and bad experiences, get a bullet that is adequate. The 223 is barely there even on perfect shots. The minimum for deer is the 25 caliber, and I have two 223s which I adore.

The bullet he was inquiring about wasnt designed to fragment OR blow up. It was designed to shoot accurately and punch paper. That hollow point is part of a bullet design that helps the bullet fly more stable. Not to be confused with expanding hollow point ammunition.

I'm going to order a box each of the fusions and the hog hammers and see how they shoot. If those don't work out I have a buddy who loads and may try a few other options. Thanks for the advice.

My first handgun buck was with a contender .223 and 52 gr hp. It killed it (about 75 yards), but watching its reaction, my next barrel was a 7-30 waters -- i still consider it my deer gun. However a year or two later i passed up a shot on a buck (about 250) because i knew i couldn't make that with the 7-30. My wife took care of it with the .308 though. The point being it is all about distance and shot placement. Back when i was shooting regularly i wouldn't hesitate to push the limits a little (because i knew my abillities) now i will pass on alot of opportunities because i know that i am not up to it. Bullet design does make a huge difference but i have found my abillities to be more lacking than the performance of the equipment on alot of occasions. If you can't make a clean kill -- don't take the shot.

I don't have any experience with that bullet but I do have some experience with the .223 for deer. 27 grains of AA2015-a 40 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip-goes 3669 out of my mini 14-and it has killed alot of deer for us. With no losses.
