California and its nutria problem

Amongst all the other angst on public radio yesterday, I heard about California's nutria problem and how it's "out of hand." Hmmm . . .

Apparently bounties are illegal, and now trapping is illegal?

What's the plan?

Oh something to fix the whole issue will be used Im sure. Maybe they will start an adoption program.

They'll end up hiring some one to live trap and relocate, for some exorbitant fee. If they do anything about it. They haven't really forwarded any fixes foe homelessness, but hey, maybe nutria are a bigger priority than people.

According to this article, nutria consume 25% of their body weight daily.

Am I getting this wrong? So they ban trapping, won't let trappers reduce the numbers and then have "wildlife biologist" do the trapping at high cost to the taxpayer.

then in a late night session of the assembly authorize the use of poison deep in a budget bill in very vague language then hire a company to poison the "swamp rats" then when a California condor turns up dead from the poison , ban mouse traps in the state.

A Nutria will eat a bit more then 25% of it's body weight in a day if the food is there. They will eat as much as 40% of their body weight. The average adult is about 15 pounds but I have caught them as heavy as 28 pounds. You take six one pound fetus out and she was still 22 pounds. They are not like native critters either when it comes to having babies. They can have as many as 5 litters in two years. It might be more except for their gestation period is 120 days. They can and do breed almost as soon a they litter. The average litter will be four but with good feed can be as many as 12, I have seen a lot of litters well over the average. If average the litter average for female would be 2. Those can breed at 5 months. Starts to add up real fast with no control.
Can not be positive but I would say Cal's Nutria are Oregon Willamette Valley escapee or transplants. New Jersey still has Nutria I have read and if not the habitat there is not real conducive for Nutria as they cannot stand weather below freezing very well. Cal's San Jaoquin has as good a weather as does Louisiana. Gonna be all but impossible to get rid of them even if the type of traps that work best were legal.
