Porcupine vs coon hound

Porcupine vs coon hound - 10/01/19 04:43 PM

Well the hound decided she needed to tree a porky last night while out for her last pee...took about 30 quills to the muzzle and right paw. Yanked them with pliers and she seems ok. Spent about an hour fingering her lips and jowls. Question is aside from hunting it down what are some successful ways to trap it? Sorry no pics of the stickered hound but here are the ones I yanked... [Linked Image]

Salt. Porkies like salt. Bait with your best axe handle, or your canoe paddles. grin

What Charlie said. They love salt. I also have to be very particular about where I use coyote glad lure. Using coyote gland on a set gets me about an 85 % porky catch rate. They will beat the coyotes to it more times than not. Have no trouble with them if I use a Skunk based lure.

Flat set with yote or fox pee or just a good soak of salt water

Had a hound that got stuck once and declared an all out vendetta against the whole tribe of porkies. that first time he got 30/40 quills after that less and less each time he messed with the things till after a while he would kill them without getting a one. In fact he became a real pro on killing the things

Its been several years and I still miss that hound he was a character and the best trapline dog and companion one could wish for we shared 20 years together

Thanks for the memories

I have some old leather soaking in a salt brine, will let dry and be ready for the next Porcupine, I have cut apples and put salt on them and put the apples in a live trap.

Hmm..I have a buncha leather scraps lying around. I’m assuming you’re using the leather as a bait for the cage as well ?

I had a setter and lab see their first porcupine in Valentine Nebraska! Kinda messed up a great grouse hunt, but I learned a lot. No help on the trapping part. I’ve seen one here in the last 30 years. Good luck

First time I encountered a live one was up here...seen quite a few road patties in lower 48. Haven’t had them around the cabin til now...at least that I’ve seen. Went looking for it after work but no sight of him.
Im gonna set a cage for him tomorrow.

Hoppy, I’d be glad to send some your way. Shoot me a pm with your info and I’ll send them over when I get him. One thing tho... I see you are in Florida, any chance of you sending me something cool back from Florida’s nature??
Also, I’m gonna try this coyote set, I will build the best one I ever have. Down in Oregon I’d build coyote sets and get coon, build coon sets and get opossum, build beaver sets and get nutria....there could be something to this trend lol!

Don’t think you have to worry about yer dog and porcupines anymore. BUT I once had a dog get caught in the same set. Go figure

If you go out looking for him again look up! I find a lot of them wile squirrel hunting in the spring and fall. They eat tree bark like a beaver but tend to do it up high. Find most of them in the same kinds of trees the beavers like to eat like willow and cottonwood. May be able to just walk around and find him sitting up in a fork somewhere. Pretty straight forward after that lol.

I do worry about her getting snapped in the sets intended for the porky but she’s on a short leash for now..
We have been looking up. The first time we spotted him he was up a small birch on our river trail...shoulda took em then. We did not see him last night but we will be out until we do. Wife has a vendetta, that coonhound is her baby.
