goose call question

what goose call would you recommend for an old guy.easy to blow mainly.thank you in advance

Big River flute,Olt 800 are a couple that are easier to blow,Faulk makes one also cant remember the model number.

Do not know if you are already blowing goose calls yet or not.
Short reads are the most popular but can be hard to blow effectively for some. but the short reed can and will deliver all the sounds the good makes if the call has the ability to use them. by far the most realistic sounding call that most folks can talk into and make it work is the flute. But the flute is a basic call and lacks high volume, speed, and change over that the short reed has. But when it comes to those finishing sounds a flute is hard to beat. Many will work the birds out far with the short reed and finish them with a flute. The old-style long reeds can kill geese but they are not the fade anymore. I do know some old times that still use them, but not used much.

I love wood calls but acrylic or molded plastic or Delran is what most want today.

using a short reed is different air control and tongue position than flutes. The flute can be mastered faster. and much easier to blow. If you just want to kill geese without the bells and whistles a flute will get it done. If you need to work hard birds and need all the sounds then the short reed. and a 40.00 dollar call will kill as many birds as a 300.00 call. 80 percent caller 20 percent call.

There all easy to blow the trick is to get the sounds that will attract geese to your decoys is the challenging part, I started out with a goose flute then switched to short reed calls where I will admit I still struggle at times.
Like anything you need to practice to be good at calling geese out here there isn't much for hunting pressure compared to other states.

I make short reed calls and have zero experience with flutes but I have heard they are easy at first.

If you buy an inexpensive short reed and learn some simple clucks and double clucks you can move some geese and get more confidence. Tons of instruction on YouTube.

I agree with all above advice that you have to learn the difference between flight sounds and ground sounds.

Just FYI, you will probably be tempted to buy the KH magnum clicker because of availability and price. I have found they take a tremendous amount of air to run.

Find a maker that uses the echo inserts and buy one of those (just don't let them tell you it's a "custom" call and pay accordingly)

I started with a flute but I wouldn’t recommend it. It works but I think you’re better off learning short reeds right away. Go and grab a Buck Gardner Canada Hammer.

and this by far is my favorite call..I prefer his wood calls over plastic calls..tuned nice and I found it easy to make her sing...

Short reeds I struggled with to make the calls I wanted, a lot of guys can make them sound really good..
Takes practice everyday until you can pick the notes...

I hadn't picked up my Shoremans for a long time and went out a couple weeks ago and dumped a few geese was just like riding a bike once you learn and find one that fits you its second hand..

Buck's Hammer is a easier short reed to call with,Zink Power Cluck is almost as easy to blow.

Yep. Still have my big river flute after 20 years. Still easy blower. No tune ups. Great call and if I remember right, it was cheap.

Mick Lacy Black Magic Flute is a decent inexpensive call as well. Has held up well for years.

I’m surprised no one has mentioned to learn how to tune a call to make it efficient. You can find some pretty good tutorials online on how to tune a call. Knight and hail magnum clucker guts are same type of guys used in a lot of the high end calls.

have to learn how to get the sounds coming out before you worry about tone. But if the caller is using to much air to break it over on a short reed that wedge can move forward to decrease airflow needed but the call will go up in pitch. Good for traffic birds or cacklers. I like a lower call for finishing and a higher pitch for long-distance or traffic birds to get their attention. big rivers flute is a nice call for the money if the person is using a flute I still have my walnut along with others in my waterfowl call collection. along with some that I made and did not sell because I liked them.

A side note every few years I will take out an old long reed call and for kicks and giggles call and kill geese with them. We started out hunting geese on the junkyard rigs and paper mache shells and plywood silos lol
