3 legged deer. - 11/04/19 01:05 AM

Saw a small buck from my tree stand that was missing a front leg. It looked like it didnt have a shoulder and was smooth with no scaring or missing hair. It looked like may e it was born that way. Healthy and was getting around like it had 4 legs. Anybody ever seen one that looked to be born that way?

Yep several years ago my buddy shot a 3 legged doe. It was at the end of November and it had a fawn with it. I can only assume it was hers. He shot it thinking it was crippled from a gun shot or something because of the limp. But it seemed perfectly healthy, other than being one leg short.

About 20 years ago I saw a deer just out of my comfort range during gun season. Saw it was limping along and thought it was wounded so I took the shot. It was missing the hind leg just below the knee joint. It was healed over completely and I couldn't tell if it was an injury of defect.

Watched a 3 legged buck grow up through several years about 30 years ago. Grew into a very nice buck with one side of its rack messed up. Found dead during the winter by some locals hiking in the woods.

I shot a young doe missing a front leg with no scarring. When it crashed to the ground, I could see a tiny nub under the skin . I wish that I had spent some time looking closer to that nub, but since there wasn't any meet on that shoulder, I left it on the carcass and tossed it.

Had a basket 8 go through the back yard this morning, had all his legs but the front right was broke right at the joint. Car hit I think, looked painful.

in 2017 we got 3 deer

first was broken a basket 8 front leg busted at the knee looked fresh like it had been hit with a slug earlier that day.

2nd was a doe running nearly the same speed as all the rest on the first joint of the rear leg looked car hit recently dirt in the cartilage.

3rd was a healed over front shoulder and leg hit , the shoulder was about 1/2 the size of the other , the knee joint was huge like an apple and I found broken ribs.

there were a lot of car deer hits that year.

20 years or so ago I had a 3 legged doe running around my area where I used to live. You could tell her from the others when she walked. Kinda hopped with only one front leg. But when she ran it was like the wind, just like all other deer on a run. She wound up having at fawns for at least 8 years that I caught her on my cameras. Don't know if she was born that way, had a leg shot off, got caught high with a snare or what ever. She had no stub or scaring that I could see and I had plenty of pictures of her at my cameras. I was sad when she no longer showed up. She was a joy to watch and kinda an inspiration, seeing she had a major handicap. Gotta respect and admire all living creatures!

Had this old gal around our hunting area for around 7 years. Named her Trips. Her missing leg looked like this the firt trail cam pic we had of her. Have no idea haw she got this way but she was one tough cookie. Smart too! In all those years, she was only seen from the stand 2 times by my boys and I. We had already agreed that she would get a pass from us but she never really gave us an opportunity to take her out even if we wanted too. Most years she raised twins. Like the previous poster, we were sad when we stopped getting pictures of her. Assume she died of natural causes or got hit by a car. Never heard of anyone claiming to have killed her.

That is exactly what that one my buddy shot looked like. The good front quarter was just as big as her hind quarters. They are some tuff critters.

With all the wildlife and autos and travel the number of animals recovering from injuries is probably far greater than we may estimate or guess. Those places that do 300-1000 deer per year in processing see a lot of injury, scares etc. I am amazed also at the number of coons I skin that have broken legs, bruises, scars etc.

If you have ever cut hay for a period of time you understand how some of these clean cuts happen. Amount of fawns hiding in hay and not moving until you are on top of them sad. You start to learn were the bedding hot spots are. I would walk parts of fields and kick them up. Most I have to believe bleed out but have shot several adults over the years only missing bottom joint.
