Lovin’ these Duke 550s

Lovin’ these Duke 550s - 11/07/19 06:44 PM

Catching a pile of fur in them...wish I would have bought more. Filed the dog end on an angle and got the pan tension good and low for fox.

Had a smoking nice eastern brush wolfy coyote today in one too. Enjoy!

Put that coyote for sale on Taxidermy.net site if you don't mind skinning for taxidermy.

That's a pretty coyote, and those skunks sure represent both ends of the spectrum stripe-wise!

Dang, that's a nice haul, maybe I should head out your way and you can teach me to trap grin

Re: Lovin’ these Duke 550s - 11/07/19 08:55 PM

What's not to love? Other than the pan and cheaper swivels they are pretty much exactly like the MB 550.

Great looking catches. I can't wait to get out, but unfortunately the VA has me scheduled for another surgery on referral Monday. Season starts the 13th, so I don't think I'll make the opener.

That's sure some sweet piles of fur.

Re: Lovin’ these Duke 550s - 11/07/19 09:53 PM

Roughly 10 or more reds for each coyote. I hope you can hold that ratio or better. Here when I started trapping in this area 38 years ago that is what I was catching and now it is more like 30-70 with reds being the lower number. Much of the rest of WI south and west of me with larger fields and more open areas have even fewer reds.
I agree that coyote will be in demand by someone. That is one of the nicer ones from a color aspect I have every seen.

Coonduke
I suspect you are wicked busy in the fur shed. When you have a chance could you please explain your method to lighten up the pan tension?
Thanks

File the notch top on a downward angle. Do it a little bit at a time so you don’t go to far. After a few you get a feel for it.

Good catches, with those number's you shouldn't be worried about saving a few bucks per dozen buying the copies when you clearly catch enough fur to use the best footholds the real MB 550's just my 2 cents worth.Great catches, keep hammering them.American made when ever possible.....

Re: Lovin’ these Duke 550s - 11/07/19 11:47 PM

Then he'd have to change his handle to Coon MB and that would just be weird.

Not to further stir the pot, but I noticed MTP is no longer selling Duke traps. Just a few parts for them.

Agreed, it is crazy how out-of-hand these 550 post get. Just FYI I put out 12 coyote sets yesterday, 3 duke 1.75's, 3 mb550's and 6 duke 550's. I will report back any updates if I can make a catch with em.

Donna and I stand firmly with those who innovated and brought us all the MB 550. MTP and the Caven crew have absolutely changed the mid-size trap landscape for coyotes in the past decade and are worthy of our hard earned $$$.

Rob Caven did all us canine trappers a service when he labored in his tool shop 16-20 hour days... getting everything just right, listening to trappers input, and marketing the best priced trap for coyotes and canines in decades. Hands down. 1000's of hours of sweat and late nights. And a bunch of money out in dyes and such too. All on a gamble this new trap design would help all of to eliminate what we all used to do ourselves. Laminate, weld, cut, grind, on and on it went for us to get stock traps as we needed them. And then along came the "stock" super design and rugged real deal of the MB 550's and we could all get out of our own shops and get on to picking up poo and such!!

And then Rob continued to labor for another 10+ years with hours and hours each day spent "at the shop", often sleeping right there at the MTP shop, to KEEP UP with everyone's orders. You know how we expect products asap, leaving his own trap line vacant all these years. Great service few would have kept up with because not many work like the Cavens let me tell ya! And....always pleasant, always diligent, always above board and then some. Couldn't get better service.

Along comes a knock off for a few bucks less to scoop up whatever biz they can get by undercutting. Same name. Same basic design. Just cheaper is the game plan.

I wouldn't spend .05 cents for the new DKs. It all doesn't pass the sniff test for how you would like to be treated. And I'm a coyote trapper by trade so I can tell good poo from bad.

Go MTP go. We appreciate your continued long hours (folks have no idea how much blood, sweat and tears is on those shop floors in Pennock, MN.
Meanwhile, A nameless, big company's owner, who's main biz isn't even trapping, is prolly smiling as he sends another order to the Asia mainland.
No $$$ from the June's to 'em. Nope. Nada.

Re: Lovin’ these Duke 550s - 11/08/19 01:58 AM

My thoughts on the 550 aside. I didn't see any other trap manufacturers giving away 110s to kiddos at the nta. Bill approached my son as we were walking through the nta (nowhere near the Duke table) an introduced himself an gave my son a 1$ an said go outside and play that game out there young man. I had not noticed it on the way in an didn't understand what bill meant until we went out an my son noticed some kids throwing a baseball at set traps an when hit he would give them a #1 ls or a 110. Once I realized he gave my son a dollar from his wallet to go play a game to win a trap on his dime I thought to myself that's a pretty good fella......

I will never buy a Duke trap in my life. Blatant rip off of: name, design, invention.
