Coon starts today, so I will set for coyote today also. I always wait till coon comes in to set for coyote. Better fur than Oct. and I don't have to release all the coons I catch that get in my K9 sets. Yote fur best from Thanksgiving to New years.

The fur is definitely better now than 3 weeks ago,the last one i caught on the 6th was really nice. I will pull most of my line right before gun season and resume after.

Better go get `em while the gettin's good. Sullivan had an article in FFG a couple years ago titled "Canines Prime Early and There's No Need to Wait", or something similar.

In my limited experience, my early season (even October) coyotes sell for as much or more than ones I catch in December-January. It's true they aren't fully prime, but they aren't rubbed, kinky, or matted, either.

I always try to wait until raccoon season opens up but I sometimes get so eager I can't wait that long. But I'm going to be laying out my line this weekend.

How do you guys get property to set before/during deer season? I have plenty of property to set on but all with the stipulation that I don't set foot on them till after deer gun season.

Re: Indiana trappers - 11/08/19 02:05 PM

I have several properties like that also where I'm not allowed to be there until the deer hunter go home.

Most of the properties I can trap now, there are no deer hunters on it because it's not good hunting land - just a crop field with a brushy ditch line. I have several properties where I trap that border deer hunting properties, though. I've had deer hunters sic the game warden on me because they don't like me trapping on properties next to the ones they are hunting on. Frankly, I don't like them hunting on the properties next to where I trap, either. But I never considered calling the warden and telling him something suspicious is going on. Some deer hunters really annoy me.

Right now, my problem is that several of my trapping grounds have the crops cut and are likely going to be chisel point plowed sometime soon. I don't want to put traps out in fields that are about to be savaged by a big, green, monster!

Crops cut ? heck, my trapping land still has standing corn. Like you I don't want to set and have traps ran over. Hope they get that corn out soon.

Re: Indiana trappers - 11/11/19 06:15 PM

I set out my line on Saturday and connected on one opossum in bucket set and one small tuft of coyote fur in a 550. Might have been chest hair or foreleg hair.

I haven't check sets yet today but probably won't be much running tonight with the wind and blowing snow/rain.

Thankfully, I think I have all my sets pretty well freeze proofed.

Just got back from the only fur buyer left . My coon were large to small and he gave 4 dollars each . and that was on the carcass price. I did a lot of work for him back when fur brought good money.

Caught TWO coyotes yesterday! First time I've ever caught two coyotes on the same day. Caught a monster of a boar coon, too. The boar coon seems really heaily furred but I haven't fleshed it yet.

Dang man! You got four today? I didn't think there would be much moving as windy as it was last night.

Here in Hancock County, it just started snowing about 2 hours before I went to check my traps yesterday evening. First snow on the ground this season.

Re: Indiana trappers - 11/15/19 07:01 PM

I picked up coyote #5 this morning - that's my all time record - one more than the 4 I caught two years ago. Man, it seems to be coming easy so far this year. Gonna try to catch 10 of them this season.

Saw some muskrats eating soybeans out of the field near a ditch the last couple of days. So, tomorrow I'll take the boys to put some of their rat traps out. I know where there's a beaver dam nearby, too, if somebody else isn't already trapping it.

I'm getting tired of combing cockleburs and stick-tites out of coyote pelts, though!

Year to date:

Coyote: 5
Fox: 1
Raccoon: 1
Opossum: 1
