What engine in new truck - 11/09/19 09:36 PM

Looking at a new rig, what engine would you get, the 3.5 eco boost or the 5.0, both in 10 speed.

Re: What engine in new truck - 11/09/19 10:49 PM

I have no experience with either. The only thing I have heard about the eco boost is, you either get eco or boost, not both at the same time. Take that for what it is worth....not much. Lol

If your towing anything heavy, get the naturally aspirated larger displacement engine.

Re: What engine in new truck - 11/09/19 11:15 PM

Got a 13 with the 5.0 and 88k on it and no problems with the engine knock on wood only issue I had was the fuse for the fuel pump overheated and melted the contacts in the fuse panel.... wasn't hard to fix it too. My concern when I bought my truck was that little engine ( the eco boost ) is cranked to milk all the power it can produce... so what's the life of that motor when it's running at the top of the power range. where as the 5.0 coyote engine is a detuned mustang engine that's no where near the top of its power range. I look at it like race cars yeah those guys are pushing crazy hp but there is no life on the engines either but this is just my $.02 maybe someone else can tell you other wise all I know is my 5.0 has been a good reliable engine that's getting 17.5- 18.5 miles to the gallon from day one and that's driving everything from highway to farm fields.

If your buying a ford get the 5.0. All of the 3.5 EcoBoost that come in for service at the shop I work at shows around 14mpg average on the dash. My 1998 Chevrolet 305 with 250k on the clock gets that or better.

Get a 5.7 hemi and ditch the ford. Never saw a ford that didn’t spend as much time in the shop as on the road, not a newer one anyways.

Good milage with the ford eco also. With summer tires on the hwy I get between 10 and 12 ltrs/100km.

I think a lot of the newer vehicles are less reliable than some of the older ones. All a crap shoot.

Re: What engine in new truck - 11/10/19 12:46 AM

I'd say it depends on if you're going to tow anything. A buddy bought the eco boost and pulled his trailer to FLA. He went through twice as much gas as his previous truck. He wasn't happy.

Re: What engine in new truck - 11/10/19 01:32 AM

I bought a 2013 F150 Super Crew with the ecoboost new in 2013. I currently have 88000 miles on it with zero issues. It is only the 6 speed. I get 16.5 around town and 19.5-20.5 highway. I have a lead foot so more conservative driving will yield better. Plenty of power and torque. It tows very well, but one downfall to the F150 for towing is the actual truck weight whether you get a 5.0 or a 3.5 the truck weight is around 5900 lbs. if I were going to tow a lot I would not own a f150. That being said I purchase a new truck every 7 years and this spring it will be another F150 3.5 Ecoboost as it fits my needs very well.

What extragallactic parsec are you from Frenchy? With your weird units of measure and what not.
How about using the same units of measure that Jesus used in the Bible?! This is America!

Re: What engine in new truck - 11/10/19 01:48 AM

LTRs per hundred km is less complicated.Gallons are different wherever you go-some gallons are 4.5 ltrs and some-like yours are only 3.7.
So for comparisons sake and to have all things equal-miles per gallon is not accurate.Ltrs per hundred km can be easily converted to whatever size your gallon is,unless you are stupid at math.

Re: What engine in new truck - 11/10/19 02:34 AM

Wife has the 5.0 - 2014 - we bought in spring of 15. All the power you need. Pulls my work trailer, boat and anything else when needed. Fuel mileage is unreal for a truck. We have been getting 20-21 mpg on the highway. no bs. average 18 running around town and such. Also know a guy who has a 2012 with the 5.0 and same story. We have over 50k on ours so far and hasn't been to the shop once. knock on wood. I would highly recommend the 5.0 vs the eco boost.

Didn't you just get the Ford you are driving now? Maybe, you should look at a Chevy. wink

Yes I did. I have a 2017 with the 3.5 eco and 10sp tranny. Nice truck with plenty of power but gas mileage sucks. I’m always pulling my boat or small trailer with ATV, lucky to get 12 mpg pulling and in the winter it’s worse. Always filling up. I’d be better off with something else I think.

Re: What engine in new truck - 11/11/19 12:38 AM

Hopefully the 3.5 Eco Boost bad motors from 2015-2016 are a thing of the past. You can do your own research. Ford mechanics say the 5.0 is a pretty good motor. With that said, I have a 2010 with the 5.4L. 3.31 diff gear. Gets pretty good mileage on the highway (19-20). But, I owned 5 Toyota trucks before that, and when people ask me I just tell them that a Ford isn't a Toyota. There's gotta be 15 small, irritating things I dislike about the Ford. More than likely will never own another.

Re: What engine in new truck - 11/11/19 01:39 AM

I am no sucker for punishment, Chevy Silverado for me. 5.3 4x4 getting 22-24 mpg daily at 77 mph freeway, work is a 100 mile round trip, with other runs about 600 or so miles a week. Between weird problems, broken spark plugs and crazy expensive cracked exhaust manifolds why a Ford? Cheap initial cost? . My Chevys are ran 250,000 miles then traded, with minimal expense. To each their own I guess. One mistake I made was fancy rims and 22 inch tires, just north of $1200.00 at tire replacement time, wish I got 18 inch tires.

It doesn't matter what you get, it will cost way more than it is worth. You will have to fill up a gas tank an offal lot to pay for a $60,000 PU even if the mileage it double.

It's still brand new. Update us when your over 100,000. I'm a Chevy owner and my truck has been really good as far as reliability. 175,000. I'm keeping it till 200,000. Thinking about Ford and if I do, I want the naturally aspirated 5.0 so I'm interested in people's thoughts once there truck has been through the paces.

This right here is the reason I will never buy a brand new vehicle. Pay 60k+ for a pickup that will be worth less than 25k in four years? That’s the math and I don’t have that kind of money to burn. Lose 10k soon as you sign the paperwork.

Re: What engine in new truck - 11/11/19 10:44 AM

I would never own a Ford, but have friends that don't know better and they tell me the eco is good for maybe 100k and then junk. Get a 5.7 Hemi and get better mileage than any of the Fords and more power. I have had 3 and put about 200k on the before I traded. Got 158k on this one I have now and never had an engine problem. Go Ram.

I get 22 on highway with my GMC Sierra 1500 crew ltz, it's a 2016.
Just turned 60K and it's only been oil and filter changes so far, runs like a champ. I intend to keep this one a long time.

A new truck doesn't have to cost that much if you stay away from all the extras. I gave $38,000 for my 2018 new. 5.3 ltr double cab LT, 4-door, 6'6" box, 4X4, I added heated seats and tow package. I priced newer used stuff and they wanted the same price.

Re: What engine in new truck - 11/11/19 12:56 PM

I have the 3.5 and couldn't be happier. Son with the same truck has the 5.0. There is NO comparison in power the 3.5 has it smoked. Higher tow rating higher HP by a bunch. Ford even scrapped the standard bigger V8 for the 3.5 L in the Raptor for this reason. 3.5L has the highest HP of all the motors in the Ford stable. You are going to use a little more fuel when towing if you are into the turbos all the time. I'm getting 16.5 mpg average running 35's. 158000 trouble free miles.

I just bought a 2019 F250 4X4 extended cab for about 42,000. It has the 6.2 and it has plenty of power.

Got the 5.0 in a 2010 and a 3.5 in a 2019. The 3.5 has a lot more power and slightly better mileage.

Buy one about a year or two old also. Let someone else take that first couple years steep depreciation drop.
