Filled my otter tag

Punched my otter tag yesterday. Caught this one in the same spot as the one from last year. 330 on a bottom edge set, right in the back yard.

I tuned up the dog/trigger per some posts on here a while ago. Caught the otter right behind the head.

I got one tag this year, some guys got 2. Next year we will hopefully have a quota of 2, no application/drawing.

Is there a fee for the tag ?

There is an application fee, I think, not sure how next year will work. I believe it will be included with a trapping license.

Could not believe I forgot to apply for an otter tag, so some of you with two tags, you are welcome.

I saw a couple toilets along the creek before the big rains hit this fall. Not much since. It helps that I am a mile and half downstream from a fish hatchery and a mile upstream from a larger river. Lots of movement through the area.

I was going to set the crossover they were using between my pond and the creek, but the creek froze over a lot sooner than I thought.

Planned on getting more sets out this weekend, guess I'll switch my focus to mink now.

I was pulling my colony bottom edge set line today. Lot of of ice on the river even in the moving water. Glad I got out before tomorrow. Saw two sets of otter tracks in two different sections. In one place there were two and one slid right over the ice above one of my colonies. Probably just as well as they would have blown that all to H. Last week 3 houses sprung up in a wetland shallow pond in a field where I trap. I was able to walk out on the ice today up close to the houses. Why they built there I don't know. There is about 6-8 inches of water in those areas. There will be 3 inches of ice there by tomorrow morning!

Tags for otters are foreign to me. If I want to try and catch a 1000 I can. Is the otter population that low in the north or is it just politics for such a small quota?

Michigan has a limit of 2. I don't think it is a population issue but I am just the guy in the woods every day so how would I know. Lol.
