Chain drowners for beaver

Chain drowners for beaver - 11/18/19 02:20 AM

I'm wanting to set up some chain drowners for my beaver traps. I would really like to use double loop chain cause its cheaper and would like to be able to steak through it.so my question is what size chain can i get a 3/8 rebar steak through and what would be the proper lock to use?or if I could get away with down sizeing the steak diameter to fit through smaller chain but I really dnt like the sound of that. I looked at buying pre made chain locks cause the prices arent to bad but the only locks I can find for sale are for rebar or 1/0 double loop chain only and 3/8 steak won't fit through it. And also I could fab some locks if any of yall know what size tube and such to build them out of to fit the proper size chain to get a steak through I just thought I would be time ahead to buy em

Tried that, didn't like it. Didn't slide smooth and would hang up. Converted them to long chains. Went to 8' fiberglass tree stakes for drowners.

I love my chain drowners. I bought Bauer locks from MTP and use 2/0 twin loop chain with a single stake swivel on the top end.

Se I wouldn't mind using machine chain but I was just thinking twin loop had more room to run a steak through. I was just trying to simplify things by not having to make any real conections on the stake end.was hoping to make all my chains the same length. So just want to attach my weight to one end of my drowner chain, then chunk out or walk out to deep water, set location will dictate how far out that is, then just pull chain tight run t bar stake through a loop, throw slack chain out of the way then I'm good to go. Just didn't know if anyone had a system like that that worked good. I mean I could throw weight out, pull chain tight then s hook a swivel or something to run the stake through but I'm trying to save time and another conection.

Yup..that’s what I do....throw weight out, then pull chain tight, then attach to “S” hook on the swivel that the rebar stake goes through. I make chains 10-12 feet long. Never had a problem

I was just trying to find a chain I could stake through and not have to make the s hook conection.prolly no chain that will work without being to heavy I guess. Was just trying to se if any of yall knew of a system like that. Maybe I should just try to make a system of my own that will work like that. I'm always wanting something faster easier lighter lol.

Fast easy and light = Fiberglass Rods....I’ve always wanted to try them.

I'm a welding/fitter fabrication and designer for a living and a little bit of an engineer without the over building and high pay lol. Maybe I could come up with something that would benefit all of us. Se if I could figure out what kind of chain that you could run a stake through that wouldn't be to heavy and expensive and design a lock that would work on it that you could just s hook your weight to one end, roll em up nice and neat till you get out to the set, then just throw out your weight, slide your trap and lock on,pull your chain tight, run a stake through a link and your good to go

But you can't roll up a fiberglass rod nice and neat and carry half a dozen in a pack basket

I use #2 machine chain, I use a crunch proof at the top but, I also use a sleep easy caribiner style hook when I need to shorten the length. I know they would fit through twin loop chain and also a 3/8" rear stake, because I use 1/2" through them. [Linked Image]

I just use the sleep ezs for the top and bottom stakes. Just move the top EZ to where upu need it to adjust length. You can use a 3rd EZ near the bottom stake to act as a drowner stop.

When Im using Chain in a location not good for fiberglass 10' rods.
My chain has Two - S- hooks on the bank end for cross staking IF needed. The deep water end has an Add-a -link or snap...so it is moveable for any depth. I'm no different than any trapper over the years You try lots of things for Weights. Personally when using chain I fill up a feed sack at the site attach it below the deep water snap and heave it in.

Everyone's Idea of the best gets worked out with trial and error. T-man cuts down on the learning curve a lot for new trappers.

If you are worried about the weight of a S hook shorten the chain by two links. A chain drowner is not really rocket science. Any one that is a welding/fitter fabricator and designer for a living and a little bit of an engineer, should be able to make a S hook that a trap stake goes through or a swivel if you are worried about the 29 cents it will cost you.

I've used cables with rocks in a sack and chains, but drowning rods are so much less hassle. The fiber glass ones are light weight and work like a charm.
