adc coyote strategies - 11/18/19 01:09 PM

So .......Ive been trapping coyotes for local ranches. The ranches here in Southern Colorado are relativily small (100 to 400 acres). While there are a few resident coyotes on the ranches,, most of what I catch are transients. I typically will catch between 10-30 coyotes in a 30 day period per ranch. Here in Cali-rado we have to get a 30 day trapping exemption to use leg holds and snares. (These were ban in 1994. https://digitalcommons.unl.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1037&context=vpc18 ) Since we only have 30 days per year per ranch I am looking to get more efficient at catching more. The main issue that we run into is local coyotes avoiding the ranch once they see another coyote caught.
I start trapping another ranch tommarrow. any and all comments welcome, especially the sarcastic pseudo-humorous ones. Long Live Trapperman!!

Did I misunderstand. Did you mean 10-30 coyotes per 100-400 acre ranch PER ranch? I have never heard of a population that dense. Can I come down and do some calling?

I was just thinking the same thing.

Actually what I should say is I average 16 coyotes per ranch per year. Sometimes a lot more but I have been skunked(mostly due to my inexperience)
Yes coyotes are thick here. Your welcome to come call but we have a pile of people that call. You’ll get young dogs early, but after Christmas break you’ll play heck getting much up unless your fluent in yote.
What really bothers me is that after 14-20 days the catching on these ranches comes to a complete halt. Not because I’ve caught them all but because they avoid the gauntlet. Within a month or two of pulling out the coyotes will fill the void again.
Which is why I’m trying to develop a hit em hard n fast strategy. More steel, more steel, more steel!!!!

I'm no ADC guy but in real high density areas I would think it would be hard to clean them out in any measurable way for any length of time by yourself on smaller tracts of land. As you stated they just fill back in behind you.

This isnt my idea but iike to do it whenever possible if you can divide the properties into four quadrants,or make a cross, your goal is to hit every travelway that allows the coyotes access to the next quadrant.

Yea thanks, makes sense concentrate on the highways. 3 miles east west, 3 miles north south . 👍

Are you charging by the coyote? Being handcuffed like you are, I wouldn't.

you need to kill them in the spring if you want to see fewer coyotes. den and trap. if your killing 16 coyotes on a half section, especially out of those potato fields and pastures, your whacking them. there is always a winter shuffle of coyotes in winter. april and may is the time to actually lower numbers

Yes by the coyote, except from Nov1-Jan-1, I do it for the fur.
I did do one ranch last spring, in March. Need to learn to den.
Thanks everyone, we are suppose to get snow tonight, if we do I’ll post a few pics
