Any one have any better luck ? - 11/24/19 05:42 AM

I'm tellin you guys seems every time the perfect situation in the woods happens I seem to mess up lol. To the night vision rig up to the farm tonight and within 30min located a nice hog. Was up wind of me almost the whole time but do to the brush island he was moving in and out of I spent about an hour trying to get a shot. I tell you I had to have been less than a few yard from him a few times ! But finally moved back to the fence row and figured had have to break cover to go to the pond . Bout five minutes later the cows start acting up and I see this nice razorback step out at 50yd tops ! I sighted in today at 50yd and I don't know what happened. Either I missed a perfect shot or these FMJ 7.62x39 ( which is my favorite hog round out my sks in the thick stuff) just ain't do the trick. Squeezed off the first round a little behind and low on the front shoulder ,which usually drops em with my experience and he ran off kinda slow so I figured I got a decent shot but after 30 min of looking around couldn't find a drop of blood dont know if i completly missed or what. Any how no bacon but guess that's why they call it hunting lol.
Has anyone elese had any better luck hunting lately lol ?

Never shot any animals with FMJ, but can’t imagine that being a good hunting round. I would think they’d punch right through without expanding.

What they said.....you might have center punched him but FMJ does not expand or leave anything to track. Only way to stop them quick with FMJ is a head or spine shot.

FMJ's are for punching holes in Soviet helmets not hunting

Had actually bought some a month ago for the purpose but ended up shooting them up ,figured at $10 for 40rd I'd just go buy some more but my luck being what it is only thing anyone had was FMJ. Which again has worked in the past so figured it count hurt. That being said I did have some wolf poly formance HP's but my generally didn't like an.

likely the reason the FMJ works is that they are flat base most of the time and turn shortly after entering and plow through base first .

likely a clean miss if you found zero blood.

I would be checking zero again some times it moves when we least expect it . sks scope mounts being what they are.

sometimes we just pull the shot.

you might want to order some ammo that isn't FMJ , while it looks like hogs don't require expanding ammunition , deer does in AL.

either from a local shop have them bring you in some or order some from online.

having a decent ammo around and having the gun zeroed for it isn't likely to be something you would regret.

part of why I use soft point ammo in all my 223 that is all the same so that I am zeroed for a game load all the time it only costs me a touch more.

I tried some of this ammo and some of that ammo only what was on sale and would then question it if I hadn't had time to check zero.

there is that old saying about a man with one rifle , not necessarily completely accurate but do agree a man who knows his rifle and load and doesn't over complicate can be a very effective marksman.
