17 WSM Coyotes - 11/28/19 07:41 PM

I am wondering if anyone has any real world experience shooting Yotes with 17WSM? What ranges is the round effective at both broad side and can you shoot through the chest if they are facing you? I am shooting the 20 grain Hornadays.

I have shot a few with mine. I wouldn't go past 100yds with a broadside shot or 50-60 chest shot. I know some will say they've shot them further out with a 17hmr but it's not an ethical shot.

17WSM and the 17HMR are not the same thing and I never heard of a 17hsm.

I have only shot a 17HMR and I would not consider that a good round for Coyotes.

I agree, neither are a GOOD coyote round. I would feel more confident with my WSM then my HMR, but still wouldn't go past 100yds with the WSM.

I've shot probably 6 with the one I used to have and everyone went down in sight or dropped except one but it was a long shot probably 150 yards and I never found that one, for closer shots I thought it was adequate

I know you are asking about the WSM but I have shot a couple with a HMR at about 50 yards with no problems. Much past that they run away

The 17 WSM is a fantastic round for built up areas etc.. where close shots are common and you don't want to have to worry about the shot going a long ways. Some municipalities/counties may have rimfire only areas-this is where the cartridge would really shine. Is it an adequate cartridge to kill coyotes consistently from 100yds and down I would say absolutely.Beyond that get a varmint caliber cartridge like a 223 or a 204-if ya like to sew and are shooting longer range maybe a 22-250.

Honestly though in my experience the 17 wsm is fantastic 100yd gun as long as you place the shot where it should go-Texas heart shots and your coyotes will run away never to be found.

Every situation is different and you are going to get multiple answers that may or may not apply to where you hunt

Is anyone making a good rifle for the 17 WSM? When the B Mag came out I Really wanted to buy one but when I finally got my hands on one it seemed really flimsy and cheap. Figured I’d wait for more selection. Well it’s been a couple three years and the only other one I’ve seen is the savage 7717 (I think?). And it really expensive for a rim fire I thought.

Thanks guys. Most shots are under 100 yards so I am going to try it. I have a 243 but don't like using it in the woods on close shots.

My 17 is a bmag, they are cheap and flimsy but reasonably accurate. Trigger sucks.

I shot my first two evenings ago using my Savage wsm standing slightly quartering away at 125 yards. 25gr in the neck he never knew he was dead. It did not exit.

The 17 hmr or wsm is an excellent choice for coyotes, especially when one is focused on proper shot placement( head/ neck) Ethical and reliable at 200 yards and under.

Get a 17 Rem if you want a 17 coyote gun.

Shot placement is what matters with these little pills of death (HMR and WSM). No room for error. Having said this, if you want a dead coyote right there every time you see one, choose something which provides for more room for error for when less precise shot placement should occur.

I have shot and killed many animals in excess of a thousand pounds with a 22 LR with proper bullet placement.

The Ruger model 77 is a pretty nice piece and is chambered in that caliber (.17 WSM). I happen to have one but have not killed any coyotes with it yet but hope to some day. I think at close range it would work OK with no fur damage since I doubt there would be an exit wound in most cases.
Here is what mine looks like: PS, It is not cheap, however.

Man I would like to find one of those. I have a twin to it in a 22 hornet.

Mn that's the rifle I wanted but being my first incursion into the .17 caliber realm I didn't want to spend that deep. Having used and experimented with the savage I bought the Ruger would do nicely as well.
I am thinking now of getting another .17 in more of an ar platform and equipping it with thermal sights. I am totally confident with the caliber to 150 yards on coyotes and night hunting I do not expect to shoot any farther than that.
