Sarcoptic Mange questions.

Sarcoptic Mange questions. - 12/02/19 12:28 AM

We all catch coyotes with mange. I had a double yesterday, one pup missing a lot of hair, and a big adult that only showed missing hair on his back legs. After dispatching I brought home and looked over carefully because this was a heavy furred, long guard hair coyote. I was unable to visually confirm that there was any missing hair areas anywhere else. I skinned him and looked some more. Still couldn't see any other areas affected.
So the question is: once the mites are on a canine, and missing hair is obvious on lower legs, have the mites already migrated to other areas of the coyote's body but can't be visually detected because no obvious hair loss has yet occurred? Yes, I know they are microscopic. My vet buddy says freezing the hide will kill the mites, BUT, not necessarily the nits which after removing from the freezer may hatch later.
I doubled bagged the hide this morning and it's in the garbage.
I've included pictures, it was a double catch. Second one in this field. The coyote in the front looked like a pup and was missing a lot of fur. Big dog looked good until I noosed him and flopped on the ground for examining. Definitely not a friendly coyote.

The one in the pic looks OK,I don't think I would have thrown it in the garbage.I would give it a good spray with raid, bag it for a few hours then skin it.

About 15%-20% of the red fox I catch have at least some mange started. It almost always starts at the hips and tail and works it's way forward. If there is no hair loss forward of the hips and it is minimal on the hips I will put them up like any other fox. Been doing it that way for many years with no ill-effects.

I just put one up two days ago with very little hair on it's tail and some hair loss on the back of both rear legs. I flipped it fur side out this morning.

I'll get pics tomorrow if I think of it.

I don't know why so many guys seem to live in fear of specie-specific mange mites (not talking about you 3togo). I've heard all sorts of crazy recommendations (burn them, bury them, sterilize yourself, etc.)

I just put them up unless it's too bad then I toss them. I doubt the mites survive long in the winter cold.

I just did a little research reading on this. Apparently it takes several weeks to months for the animal to get looking poorly. Also by that time, most of the skin lesions are caused by an allergic reaction with no mites present in those areas. This coyote had no missing hair around the tail either.
If I get another one like that perhaps simply trimming off the lower leg areas affected before freezing would be the way to go. I sell everything green after freezing.

Danny,
some of the mange may be dermatitis mange, but I think most is mite induced. Here's another link. Mange is prevalent around the globe infecting around 100 species of animals. The link explains most everything we'd like to know. However, no mention other that temperature/humidity on what will kill the mites.
Boco, I don't think Raid could work if the mites are under the skin. Does Canadian research show anything for treatment after being skinned? Will the mites still survive if there is no longer a link between the living animal system providing living tissue for the mite(s) to feed on?

those mites die pretty quick. they are temperature sensitive. can only live on the host. i have gotten mange on my forearms 3-4 times. little red bumps that itch for a few days. the mites are also species specific, if you get a few it wont last long

Well now, do you suppose that the Gorilla louse would survive on a beaver ?

Sarcoptic mange mites are specie-specific. look it up, there is a lot of research on the subject.

That is what I've always believed (confirmed by research).

Here is a write up on it https://www.akc.org/expert-advice/health/mange-what-you-need-to-know/ I did get the mange from a coyote years ago that did not show it.I got rid of it with used motor oil on it and also used it on one of my coydogs that came down with it. It was gone in about 3 days .

Human specific mange is called scabies.

coyote mites have given me a rash for a few days yes

Re: Sarcoptic Mange questions. - 12/03/19 01:08 AM

The link I provided discussed all of the things mentioned. Life span for the mites is short.
I took the yote pelt out of the garbage container (it's cold in the garage) and put in the freezer. I'll look at it again when I'm ready to sell my next bunch of fur.

The last coyote I caught that had mange made me happy because I didn't have to skin the stinking thing.
