Sarcoptic Mange questions. - 12/02/19 12:28 AM
We all catch coyotes with mange. I had a double yesterday, one pup missing a lot of hair, and a big adult that only showed missing hair on his back legs. After dispatching I brought home and looked over carefully because this was a heavy furred, long guard hair coyote. I was unable to visually confirm that there was any missing hair areas anywhere else. I skinned him and looked some more. Still couldn't see any other areas affected.
So the question is: once the mites are on a canine, and missing hair is obvious on lower legs, have the mites already migrated to other areas of the coyote's body but can't be visually detected because no obvious hair loss has yet occurred? Yes, I know they are microscopic. My vet buddy says freezing the hide will kill the mites, BUT, not necessarily the nits which after removing from the freezer may hatch later.
I doubled bagged the hide this morning and it's in the garbage.
I've included pictures, it was a double catch. Second one in this field. The coyote in the front looked like a pup and was missing a lot of fur. Big dog looked good until I noosed him and flopped on the ground for examining. Definitely not a friendly coyote.
