Too young to be in this shape

Too young to be in this shape - 12/06/19 08:03 PM

I was blessed to be offered a opportunity to hunt private land close to me and harvest a doe Monday, that's a whole different story. Thank you Norman! My story begins yesterday. I need to fill another tag, food for my table and I was back on public state land. I fell again crossing a crick. I laid there for a spell, all muddy. Many thoughts went across my mind. I'm 53 and have had surgery that went to the wayside, in the mud I was. I was PO'D at first but then I realized how blessed I was to even be out in the wonderful life giving arena. I'm out now, but I got one.

Re: Too young to be in this shape - 12/06/19 08:46 PM

I still think I'm indestructible, but I was in a rotted hay loft and broke through like Newton;s apple. As I hung between the joists, with pigeon and whatever crap all over me, I thought this was not such a good thing. As I let myself down the remaining two feet, I noticed some real pain in my chest and shoulder. I usually just walk it off, but when I walked it off, I found myself sitting by a bale in the snow, still thinking, "You know this REALLY hurts".
Half hour later, I didn't die, it still hurt, I realized I tore something in my shoulder, but as I have no money for doctors, I went in and sat down for awhile, and thankfully the feeling like I had a car jack on my chest stopped. I guess I stretched my sternum to almost cracking it. The shoulder quit making me wince about 6 months later. I have given up though walking around in barns that the floors vanish from under you.

Congrats on the deer harvest and thank God on not getting major hurt.

When I was young I witnessed many older people deal with pain. Growing old isn't for sissies. That said is anything in life for sissies?

Falling is just an opportunity to get up again. Carry on.

You fell because you're clumsy, not because you're old.

Try not to fall next time.

6 years ago I fell off a step ladder (the rung that says not a step) thought I broke both heels.
2 years ago I fell outa my tree stand climbing down (pride hurt more than anything)
This summer I tripped over a stake in the yard, after about 16' of stumbling I gave up and bit the dust (don't tuck and roll like I used to)
Wife won't hardly let me outa the house shocked

A good stuck is key especially when your hunting a mucky swamp. Despite that I still ended up taking a seat this past weekend. Not huet at just wet and cold and muddy.

Re: Too young to be in this shape - 12/06/19 10:54 PM

I had to give up falconry after 50 years because of the deep snow in the winter. I would trip over logs and fall down. I thought I better give it up before I broke something out in the woods, 99% of my hunting was done alone. Still get the itch come fall.

At 71 I had my hip replaced in late July this year. I can walk well and carry weights etc. but Turning yet bearing weight is a ways a way. I walked about 3-4 miles in 3 days of deer hunting and I was really sore after walking on the uneven ground. Takes more time than I was hoping but I plan to get there.

I started the season needing to push myself up by leaning on my setting bucket. A few days later and after using Aleve, I could get up on my own. By the time the snow started I was literally running to sets. Gotta learn to limber up a few weeks before season next year, I guess.

Sorry to here about your fall, catch.
Maybe next time you come upon a "crick", maybe it would be a better idea to walk along the bank until you come upon a creek, or a stream, or a brook to cross.
Why do you think they call neck pain a "crick"?

Lol you knothead, he's another knothead. grin I fell because my left leg is shaky and weak now. They tell me I need another surgery but I don't want them cuttin on me again, they didn't help the first go around. And it's just me, I'm alone 99% of the time. And thanks Pawnee, that made my day!

Re: Too young to be in this shape - 12/07/19 02:38 AM

Jeff, I hope you make a quick and full recovery from your fall.

I'm only 49 and having problems this week too. I jumped across a little, seasonal spring on Monday to get to the buck I shot. When I landed a tendon on the outside of my right ankle made a loud pop. I think I tore my peroneal tendon. My right foot had felt weird and sort of flat for about a week and a half. When I landed, I believe I popped something else back in place tearing the tendon. At least my foot feels okay again. My right ankle hurts. My left hip is hurting worse from favoring my right ankle, when I walk.

I dragged the buck out and got it skinned, quartered and in the fridge before having Diane ice my ankle. It got huge.

[Linked Image]

I had to skip hunting Tuesday and Wednesday. I had Diane wrap my ankle and drive me down to within 50 yards of my stand yesterday and today and pick me up when I was done.

I hope you are able to get back to hunting soon. Don't forget we have a second gun season on 12/21 and 12/22.

Keith, you got a ugly ankle and your ankle modeling days are over lol. Thank you for the well wishes. I was blessed to hunt with a old friend on his place Monday. It stoved me up and yesterday I got out on State ground. Now I'm down again, on the couch with laptop on my lap, hurtin lol. I will be out there hopefully for the next go around and muzzleloading season.

Hey catch at least we're still looking down at the grass. I'm only 38 and I'll use a walking stick in a minute. I've got a bad knee, that gives out in an instance. At work a shovel doubles as a walking stick..when needed.

Re: Too young to be in this shape - 12/07/19 11:53 AM

53 is an awesome age, catch22!!
(Same as me)
Injuries suck, and so does getting a little older, but we got this, right?!!

I ran three half marathons this year, and ran on an 8 person team in the omaha to Lincoln market to market relay.
That last marathon was my 20th completed. I'm no spring chicken but I can still muster 9 minute per mile pace over a whole 13.1 mile race course. On shorter 5ks I can still hit 8 minute miles but it's too hard for me to keep an 8 minute mile pace up for a 13.1 mile race. That was a younger me that did that.
Yessir... we are too young to be in this shape.
Hope you heel up soon and get back out there! We got a lot of life to live yet!
Jim

These were my 2019 races..it was a good year. I logged almost 1,000 running miles this year, training and races.
December and January are for trapping and recovery. I'll start training again in february 2020.

I was at an auction this summer and was having a little problem getting up out of my chair and
had a fellow say to me "It's rough getting old, isn't it?"
I told him "no, getting old was fun, it's was once I made the trip, I started to have my problems".

The swelling has gone down a lot. Thanks for asking.

Rogue might be a bit safer than the women he may be able to introduce you to. From personal experience, Filipina women can be a little overly intense about marrying American men, if they think you're a good catch.

Re: Too young to be in this shape - 12/08/19 03:10 AM

Many Filipina women don't stay married to Americans long. They just stay married long enough to get their citizenship and start importing their family from the Philippines.

I lived near WPAFB in Dayton for many years and many service men marry Filipina women, for a little while. One of my best friends had a bad experience with one he married
