they are good trap dispatch rounds but head shooting a squirrel consistently at 40 is pretty iffy

Re: 500 22 LR thunderbolt for - 12/07/19 12:37 AM

I tried a few different bullets i had on hand with my ruger 22/45. The thunderbolts did as good or better than the winchesters and cci's (minimag and standard velocity) that i had on hand. They fed and cycled well and grouped just as good as the cci's. I am now using federal auto-match, i havent shot them for groups but they sure cycle well and have been accurate for my dispatch needs. The cci standard velocity wasnt all that impressive and had quite a few cycling problems with my pistol even though they get rave reviews everywhere.

I just ordered two boxes. I didn't really need them and shipping was a bit salty but still a good deal. Thanks for the heads up.

Thnderbolts work. Yes there are better brands but I wouldn't be afraid of getting them if I needed them. That is a good deal.

If you have a Dunhams nearby, they sell 2 boxes for $30 to $32 often and you nix shipping costs and waiting.

Re: 500 22 LR thunderbolt for - 12/08/19 03:06 PM

I buy Thunder bolts and use them a the range. I do find them to be a dirty round, but after hundreds of range shots deep cleaning is standard. CCI .22lr are imho better and cleaner, at least my Rugers say so.

them 1050 feet per second rounds of any kind are junk to me. I have not been impressed with any post Obama shortage ammo unless your paying for the really high priced stuff

If ya got a bolt action then ok. They do not cycle well in a semi.

Re: 500 22 LR thunderbolt for - 12/22/19 11:44 AM

I buy them for burning at the range, they are in fact dirty as can be, but that's ok as range time always involves hundreds of rounds and deep cleaning. Hunting is done with quality ammo that is also used for sighting. The rifles I use for burning dirty ammo and fun are not my scoped squirrel/ rabbit hunting gun. I have a mod 25 Marlin/Glenfield bolt action sighted with and shoots only CCI stingers, A Ruger 10/22 that uses only CCI mini mags for hunting.

Re: 500 22 LR thunderbolt for - 12/22/19 12:04 PM

i have shot a lot of them. got some with the rest of my ammo as well as a couple boxs in my pickup. they are great for shooting something between the eyes at 5 feet or letting grandkids shoot cans for a few hundred rounds. when i hunt though i dont want to miss at 40 yards and a squirrel or rabbit head is just to small for the accuracy they deliver. i am not afraid to shoot them in any 22 i own as they get cleaned good after a day of shooting anyway. By the time you scrub all the lead and wax loose from a hundred rounds of your favorite match ammo you will have done enough brass brushing to knock out any powder residue from thunderbolts. residue in the action cleans right up. i use hoppes #9 in the action and most of the time in the barrel.

i have an old turn of the century falling block remington 22. getting a little wore in the firing pin. sometimes it wont fire without pulling the hammer back and shooting a thunderbolt twice. cci will pop every time though in it

I've been shooting the aguila sub sonics forever. people hate them. I love them. There are about 4 diff kinds, I like the yellow box ones.

Re: 500 22 LR thunderbolt for - 12/22/19 12:38 PM

Those Aguila 60 grain rounds are great for dispatch. Heavy and quiet.

Re: 500 22 LR thunderbolt for - 12/22/19 01:15 PM

They're good not great but definitely sufficient for plinking. Remember a few years ago when we couldn't find 22 ammo? Remember the price when we did?

Buying a couple (10 or 20) boxes now for the ammo cabinet is insurance for later.

Have shot many many boxes. Thru a Remington speedmaster h&r single shot ruger bolt action. I killed a ton of fur with them. But now I use shorts.

I have never used any that are close to as dirty as Winchesters. Those things are filthy.

Re: 500 22 LR thunderbolt for - 12/23/19 12:08 AM

I had a brick of Federal high power .22s that I thought were getting old but they are still crisp as new ones, I had a old box of Experts that would not cycle the slide on my S/W 422.

Midway always run this every Christmas it seems. I’ll by 2-3 bricks every year. They seem to work just fine for me, not shooting any tournaments though. Just every day critters.

My Marlins and my Rugers shoot anything better than the Rem Thunderbolts

Re: 500 22 LR thunderbolt for - 12/23/19 01:13 PM

I have five .22 rifles and one handgun. All the rifles have been tested with eight to ten different brands of ammo. When I find one the rifle likes I buy a bunch.

My 1949 H & R Model 865 Plainsman shoots Winchester Super X Power Points (40g jacketed HP) the best out of ammo tested. My 1955 Remington Scoremaster likes CCI Stingers (33g jacketed HP), the only one besides my newer Rem 541 that does. My Savage likes Remington Yellow Jackets and my Winchester 69A likes Federal Classic High Velocity.

That is the ammo I use in each rifle when I go hunting with them.

When I'm plinking and having fun with the kids all rifles and the handgun get fed a steady diet of whatever ammo is cheap and available in bulk. In this case, the Thunderbolts. Also, they work great as dispatch ammo.

Are they junk? I don't know, never sighted any rifle with them, I prefer jacketed bullets for hunting. I know they go bang when I pull the triggers and usually hit what we're aiming at so...I guess I would need to know why someone considers them junk?

I shop the Dunhams specials pretty hard too.
They seem to have a deal every week anywhere from $15 to $17.
Sometimes thunderbolt, sometimes golden, sometimes Federal range and field, sometimes Armscor.
If I happen to be heading to Janesville, I usually get a little something there.

Re: 500 22 LR thunderbolt for - 12/24/19 02:35 PM

For plinking they will work, if you can't find anything else to shoot. 22's are no longer hard to find. Keeps your eyes open and you will find much better shells for the same price.

Re: 500 22 LR thunderbolt for - 12/25/19 05:53 PM

It's great that we can finally be picky!! It wasn't too long ago that they couldn't be had at any price.

I think it was Obama that said, "If you like your .22lr... you can keep it.".

Re: 500 22 LR thunderbolt for - 12/25/19 07:58 PM

The CCI Blazers mentioned earlier are a much better round IMO. I’ve used a lot of Thunderbolts in the past and never had an issue, until I got a bad lot. The same gun that I used to “cut my teeth” on over 30 years ago had several issues with them. To be fair, this was during the “shortage” so QC may have fallen off drastically for a bit seeing as production was running full tilt but they really left me high and dry to say the least. 3 out of every 5 I’d shot would split from where the bullet was crimped in to about halfway down the case. Prior to that, I’d had no issues. It just left a bad taste in my mouth and I’ve not looked back at them since.
