Old Tasco scope

Old Tasco scope - 12/11/19 11:28 PM

When I got that old M1 carbine for some work I did, it had a scope on it that I took off and put aside and re installed the original peep sights on the thing. Today while clearing up in the trailer I had this scope in my hands and gave it a dose of looking at and through. Its a 2.75 x 40 ... yep I know that first one is a weird number. But the thing is quite clear and has a very non critical eye relief. I am thinking that it has a few decades on it and was thinking of mounting it on a AR15 in 458 SOCOM. With that said, I don't want to beat the carp out of the thing either and don't know how solidly build those things are. I have zero experience with the Tasco brand in anything they may or may not make. Should I leave it in a box , mount is on a 22LR rifle instead, or is it sake to mount on the kicker ??

I suspect it will not hold up to the recoil of the 458. If you like it, I'd find a .22 to put it on.

Re: Old Tasco scope - 12/11/19 11:42 PM

I'm surprised a 22 rf scope held up to even the 30 carbine.A rimfire scope usually wont stand up to centerfire recoil.Maybe for a while but not too long.
That said I killed lots of bears with my 30-06 with a tasco centerfire scope over a long period of time.

In the late 70's to early 80's Tasco made a good scope. At some point afterwards, like other stuff, their product turned to junk.

I would check it for parrilex(spelling)
Most of the older cheap scopes just don't hold their gas well

I have an old 4 power tasco on my savage mod. 24----22 mag over 20 gauge. I've shot a lot of shotgun shells through it and a few slugs. the scope is still dead on for the 22 and shotguns are hard on scopes. I got the scope in early 80's.

Re: Old Tasco scope - 12/12/19 12:22 AM

The older 70's and early 80s tascos are good scopes. My dad had a couple on his 30-30 and 270, always held zero through recoil and beating around in his old truck. The new ones dont even make a good bush hook weight.

Tasco used to make good stuff way back when. I have a pair of Tasco binoculars from probably the 40's or 50's and they are pretty good. Crystal clear and I use them for looking out the back 40.

Just because the glass is clear when you look through it doesn't mean it will perform well. Try it, what do you have to lose?

If you can find one made in Japan or pretty much anywhere but China, you’re good to go. They were of decent quality then. Same with Simmons. Japan and Philippines. Otherwise, no. I’d say mount it and let it eat. It’ll be fine.

Re: Old Tasco scope - 12/12/19 02:30 PM

I have no other rifle that I can use such low magnification on other that the 458 S After a bit of googling, it looks like one of the old made in Japan ones. I ll mount it and see if it hold up I guess. It will go on a quick detach mount, so if is rattles its guts out I have the flip up sights to fall back on that I am using now on it anyway. Thanks for the input folks.

I am in the process of building a 6.5 Gibbs , but that will need a bit more magnification than 2.75 with my eyesight.

Got the magnifying glass out ala Sherlock Holmes and found out that it was made in Japan ... as it has a sticker on it that says ( Made in Japan )  blush

Don't forget the M1 Carbine was chambered in .30 Carbine, a fairly wimpy cartridge, made for close combat, not sniper grade.

most people way over magnify , just because the rifle is capable of 300 yard shooting doesn't mean most people do it or should especially on game.

2.75 would be about perfect for anything inside 200 yards where 97% of all deer , moose, bear and hogs taken.

shot my buck this year running at 125 with the scope on 2x
my son shot his standing at 100 yards on 2x we both have the same optic I put them on both guns 2-7x32 30-06 and 308win
as were gutting out his deer he says , "now I understand why you like the 2-7 so much at 100 yards 2X is crazy fast on target yet still enough magnification to put the shot right where you want it."

Re: Old Tasco scope - 12/12/19 10:26 PM

Pete that was my thinking as the 458 SOCOM is a short range cartridge that scope would work on it just fine. I had a red dot on it but that thing did not like the recoil of it and scattered. heck here where I currently hunt I can't even see 100 yards unless I start to play in a serious way with a brush hog first.

Re: Old Tasco scope - 12/12/19 11:29 PM

I have an eotech on my 458 and it works great with it. No problems with the recoil. My buddy put a 1-4x leupold (hog hunter version) on his and it held up fine for him. With the recoil on the that round you are gonna want something well made.

yes my point however is that it need not be a short range caliber , if your are never going to shoot beyond 100 yards because of terrain limitations , it could be a 30-06 , 308 or 300win mag if you have one

many people seem to think that if they have a gun that can shoot 400 yards they need the glass to see a fly on the target at 400 yards even if they will never see beyond 150 any where they hunt due to vegetation and terrain then they bring the gun up and have a hard time finding the deer because the field of view is so narrow.

it could be mounted on a 30-30 and be very handy , I like irons on a lever gun very much but early morning and late afternoon dawn and dusk hunting shots do benefit form a low powered optic especially as our eyes get older.

I have slug guns with 2-7x32 scopes for this reason I have never used the 7x for anything but sighting in. but for the cost i can't get a fixed power optic of any quality for less money.

My memories of old Tasso scopes are all bad.

Re: Old Tasco scope - 12/13/19 03:48 AM

The way I test those old Tasco scopes is put it in the freezer for an hour then set on a table at room temp for 15 minutes, if does not fog on the inside you have a good one.
Recoil on the socom is about the same as a 20ga... so the scope can handle the recoil.

note: GREENCOUNTYPETE always gives good advice about gun stuff.

Re: Old Tasco scope - 12/13/19 11:52 PM

I have an a Tasco scope that I got on a trade for some traps. I was after another scope that I also received but the guy had to even it out and the scope looked pretty nice. Anyway, I have not put it on a gun and was wondering where to figure out some info on it. It is a 6-24x40. On the reticle it says W624x40, Tiawan, AT-97 7, Pats Pending. It is by far the nicest piece of glass I've handled that was made by Tasco. I figured it had to be some of the older stuff they made because most of their stuff now is not very good at all. I'll try to get some pics up later

Re: Old Tasco scope - 12/14/19 04:45 AM

I have put it on the rifle and will put a few rounds through it tomorrow and se if it holds up and if it does, it should make a passable hunting rig for around here

Re: Old Tasco scope - 12/15/19 06:04 PM

40 rounds later my shoulder said that it was enough and the scope is still on. Who would have thunk it. The irony is that just trying it out O probably spent more on ammo than the thing is worth grin

Just filled those 40 back up and found 50 empty 30-30's and while I was at it did those as well. Can't have empty brass littering the place up lol

Re: Old Tasco scope - 12/16/19 03:25 AM

I would not put my trust in an old Tasco. They were cheaply made entry-level scopes, at best. Not wishing you any bad luck, but I doubt you will get dependable performance. There are no "free lunches" in the optics market place.

Re: Old Tasco scope - 12/16/19 03:48 AM

Charles this was a free lunch as it sat on a rifle I got from a customer ( M1 Carbine ) and that was just wrong on so many levels. So I put the original sights back on that and had this thing sitting in a draw. Previously I have not even been in the same room as a Tasco scope and know nothing about them. All I know is that the glass on this one of pretty clear right to the edge, it has non critical eye relief and now sits on a quick detach mount on my 458 SOCOM that is my truck gun and brush hunting rifle. If it scatter, I'll flip the thing off and use the flip up sights that are dead on as well. My other scopes are Leupold, MTC Nikon and a Schmidt & Bender. And a Zeiss that is currently without a job.
As this one was made in Japan and not China and that in itself is rare these days I was curious about the brand. That and the weird magnification of 2.75 peeked my interest.
